I usually do downshift myself, BUT... don't shift into too low of a gear at too high of a speed. You'll hear the rev limiter but you can still over-rev your engine because you will be mechanically forcing it to spin too fast. (Tire connected to road, tire connected to belt, belt connected to tranny, tranny connected to engine.)
The rev limiter only keeps the engine from running itself too fast, it doesn't keep the engine from being forced to spin too fast.

I personally down shift most of the time, as it keeps the engine in the right RPM range should the need arise to get out of the way. Is it necessary no and given the excellent brakes on our scooters there is little need to apply engine braking. I guess I always have and it has never affected the longevity of any engine I have ever had so I will keep doing it. As mentioned you must not down shift too quickly or you could over spin the engine, but if you down shift below the points at which you upshift that is not an issue. I do it mostly by sound and feel and it feels good

Tell you what I noticed today, I ride it like I stole it. So yes I am always down shifting and banging around. Darn good thing I wear a helmet!

Seems to me that brakes are much cheaper than engines or engine work. For those that are concerned about engine wear just pull the clutch in an down shift according to coasting speed that way you are in appropriate gear if the situation requires it. Got to admit though I down shift if I want the added punch and as long as you don't shift to low I don't believe it will hurt anything. Thats probably why automatics have a kick down on full throttle.

i wouldn´t reccomend that any more than i would pulling the clutch in and coasting round corners (no offense mate)
i doubt even rossi could match gears to road speed with the clutch pulled in.
using engine braking, you know exactly where you are, and are guaranteed to be at the right point should you need to give her a fistfull.
just my opinion........

I see your point but I was referring to downshifting to come to a stop. Cornering is different an I agree with you, I would diffenently not coast around a corner with clutch pulled in.
