I tried premium in my '99 back in June when I got it. It had ~8500 miles on it then (~11K miles now), and I noticied a BIG difference! About 7 or 8 MPG different in fact... to the bad! Admittedly it was one tank but it was mostly highway riding where the MPG should have been best. It got 35 on that tank, the lowest I'd checked it at, otherwise its been around 42 - 45 regularly. Just for giggles I may try it again someday when I have some money to burn just verify what I observed...

I guess the thing to keep in mind is that not everyone here has been here a long time. If the info I sought was "already asked and answered" (as the lawyers say), it didn't exactly jump out at me when I typed "gasoline" in the search box.

Not meaning to offend you sir, but your answer here is puzzling to me.

I typed in gas, in the forum search, and got over 5000 results! I typed in gasoline and got 228 hits so I can't understand why it didn't "jump out" at you.

Anyway, this will be my last say on the matter and hopefully no offence to you sir.

I think I typed "gasoline recommendation" or something like that. Shoulda gone with "gas", huh? Don't worry... I'm not offended. But I'm not exactly contrite either.

Regarding gas(oline), I knew that 87 octane was supposed to be the way to go, but I'd not heard much on "why." Now I have. I'll now be saving big, big money at the pump... which I shall, of course, donate to the Forum.

Anyway... as a relative newbie here, I've appreciated all the responses to my questions, and I've gotten a big kick out of the wide range of answers and opinions and personal experience on gasoline, helmet use, exhaust drilling, etc... and I'd guess others (especially other relative newbies) have too. Take care, LakeCharlesGuy...

Alright now I'm worried - I've been running 91 octane fuel since I bought my Roadie in late June of this year. I've got about 1700 miles on it. I didn't know I'm supposed to run 87 octane, I guess out of my own ignorance.

Should I be worried that SVS has infected my motor? I'll change to 87 on my next fillup.

Thanks.

Well I had to buy 91 the other day IKE has all the lowers grade in very short supply. Odly enough the bike is running great on it and I noticed at half a tank I am sitting at 85 miles which will put me at about 170 miles at fill up. That is a heck of a lot more miles than I have been getting with 87. I'm lucky to get 145-150 out of it which usually yealds about 36-38 mpg. This has all been in town so not telling what it would be highway which is usually 46-47 mpg. GO FIGURE! DO I HAVE A HOT ROD ROAD STAR?
