Know absolutely what my MPG was for this last tank 3 Months ago
I know I'm getting 34 MPG because I ran COMPLETELY out of gas today. I had left the petcock on reserve and when it started to sputter I went to flip it over to reserve and found it was already there! I wanted to run the tank fairly low since I plan on pulling it off to install a (of all things) new sending unit for the gas gauge. But I didn't intend to drain it bone dry.

It wasn't far back to a BP so I with the bike on the side of the road I started walking. I didn't get 50 feet up the road before a guy in a BMW gave me a lift. Said he rides a Honda Shadow and just couldn't drive by while another biker was walking away from a disabled bike. He even gave me a lift back to the bike and made sure I got running OK. The comments on the bike were non-stop from him too. I think I saw drool coming from his mouth when it fired up.

Long story short, I'm glad to be part of a group of folks who watch out for each other and seem to have a common concern for other folks on bikes regardless of the brand badge.

Y'all take it easy and say hello if you get down this way,

M7

Sputtered into a gas station once......But haven't had to leave it yet....

Tip , when you flip reserve on , flip the little door to the gas cap open , as a double reminder. BB

The gas cap door is a great idea! Bonus for me is the price is way right!

Thanks!

I stole from someone else , maybe here. But it's free , and it works. Wife does it also......she rides 52 miles round trip t/f work , and rides out in the mornings routinely on reserve , So it's a good second reminder. BB

too bad you didn't have that fuel sender with you, the tank was already drained. Maybe you'll get that fuel sender I sent you on soon so you'll have a better idea where you stand fuel wise. So you actually pushed a 190 miles with out refueling with a broken fuel guage? Glad a fellow biker helped you out.

Before I replaced the fuel sender, I set the trip odometer. At 150 I was looking for gas as I didn't want to run out. I usually get @ 42MPG, but didn't want to take any chances. The whole problem with this process was remembering to reset the trip meter.

Since the wife is in Italy for 10 days I'll have plenty of time on my hands to install the new sensor. Since I only put in a gallon after running dry I won't have much to drain. Hopefully this won't happen again, but if it does having a biker friendly Samaritan nearby is about as good as it can get.

I've heard that could happen. Never done it myself.
