I can't see why there would be air in the fuel line....the fuel pump would push any air out of the the line and into the carb, but the carb will still fill to the appropriate level and stop, wouldn't it? Your problem was probably just a case of your engine having cold feet at first until it warmed up. Mine does the same thing every time I start it and ride it in 50 degrees or lower. It has always done that since I've owned the bike.
