As the air gets colder (probably as we speak in MN ) it becomes denser. The cold air temps result in a longer time before the engine reaches it's operating temp so you need to use the choke a little longer. The bike will still be cold after a mile at 33-38 degree air temp. The choke enriches the lean condition until operating temps are reached.

Nah. Gonna be back in the 50's next week. Haven't even had to pull the longhandles out yet It just seemed strange that it only did it for a few seconds after a mile like that. I'll explain the reason for the enlightenment searh.

It has been in the high 20's low 30's in the morning here and this is how I have been starting my bike. Pull the choke out to 2nd notch and start. After it's running I push it in just a hair. Just so it isn't setting in the notch. Then I ride. Somewhere along the line the bike decides it's warm enough and pulls the choke in by itself. I stopped checking to see if it has pulled itself in because every time I have checked it (usually after 2 to 3 miles) it's been all the way in. The bike hasn't been giving me any grief so the choke must be staying out long enough. So that is why I am curious about manipulating the choke and choke usage problems. I haven't had to do any of it. Hope that made sense cuz I got myself all confused now. Too many words.

Thanks

That's pretty much what I do but I need to push the choke in myself.

Pop doesn't think it's carb icing but I would not rule it out completely. It certainly can occur under warm humid conditions so I would not be entirely surprised if that could be happening.

On the other hand, if I were a betting man I would lay odds on insufficient use of the choke under the cold lean conditions, especially if you're on the lean side to begin with. Don't forget, you probably have your carb set up perfectly in the dry Midwest, so you may not see those symptoms.

The choke should not pull in by itself.....NEVER ..its a manual choke
If it does.... then you have to set the friction on the knob

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/11/02 19:35

I believe Musky has done one of those 'mods' where his knob is automatic.

It might have something to do with the carb from an old Rambler I put on my bike.

Not so quick guys... I thought I had the only one that went in by itself. Mine does the same thing, I leave the house on cool mornings with the choke about halfway out and after I go about 2-3 miles , I reach down to push it in and it already is. Thought I had some new Japanese technology.
