That is the one thing that I wonder about. Many of the Darksiders report having to use up to 110lbs of air pressure to seat the beads. But others will seat at 40-50.

I think it all depends on what tire you get. I've had the tire shops using a "cheetah" to mount off-road tires...The bead wasn't different, just the tire. It'll take the right application, but I think it'll be worth a shot. Most care tires are designed to grip better toward the sidewall for cornering purposes, wouldn't this help the cornering grip on the back of a moto? I think so...anyways, don't knock it til you try it.

The thing is I know car tire beads are pretty substantial. However I don't know the difference between the two. We have several different bead makeups at work designed for the sidewall load. We also have tolerance parameters that come into play here. Just off the cuff with not any knowledge of how motorcycle tires performance are deter mended I believe if we want to take this into serious consideration we need to better understand how Motorcycle tires are constructed. Are they 1 ply construction, 2 ply construction, directional tread, how many bead wire wraps. Are they produced with chafer wrapping the beads are what are the differences that is probably over everybody's head but they may very well indeed be differences that are determined by engineers with better understanding than what we are aware of.

A couple of Weeks ago I rode to Virgina with some Buddy's. One of the guys has a Suzuki M109 with a 260 on the rear I believe. Anyhow spend most of the time behind him ( didn't have much choice ) I noticed that when he leaned into a turn his tire only made contact on about 1/4 of his tire width.

yes, this is because the bike tyre is round in section due to being designed to be leant over.

bank a car tyre over, the contact area is LESS due to a square section

if i dropped my rear tyre pressure to 20psi i could show a wider line than on the left

Re:car tires? 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
o.k. guys, i know that iīm coming across as strongly anti, but that is because i am.

in my capacity as a bike mechanic, i WILL NOT fit anything to a bike that i consider unsafe and that i wouldnīt ride myself.

i have ridden solo bikes on car tyres, and consider it unsafe. if a bike is designed to be leant over, the rubber should be capable of doing that whilst maintaining an in-line track between the wheels. a car tyre DOESNīT DO THAT. i have also ridden motorcycle combinations on car tyres, and that works fine, but the handling of a combo is worlds apart from a solo.

the `i donīt do many curvesī aguement doesnīt hold much water. yes, our tyres get squared off, and you start to notice a bit of a shimmy when it happens, so why the hell put a tyre on a bike that is square to start with and that will faff up the handling?

it has been brought up by the supporters on the web that the compounds are softer on car tyres. crap. due to the weight involved with cars ad the milage expected, the compound is harder. if it wasnīt, theyd wear at an unacceptable level that car drivers would throw a fit over.

if it was such a good idea and so good for safety in these times of the saftey nazis, the manufacturers would fit square section tyres as standard. they donīt. does that tell you something?

there are MANY supporters of car tyres for bikes on the web, but just as there are a lot of tinfoil hat sites claiming the solution to 9-11, just because itīs on the web donīt mean itīs right.

this will be my last post on this subject. iīve had my say and said enough, but my brothers, from my side of things donīt do it just to save a few bucks. you may save a bit but in the long run it could be far more costly.

your lives are worth more.

Ok, to challenge some of the incorrect info just given, I'll correct it with researched info from the DS forum...

On tire hardness...

A Durometer measures the softness of tire rubber, the softer the tire the lower the number.

Durometer Readings: (all readings taken on same meter)

BFG Touring TA 67 Goodyear Triple Tread 69
General Altimax HP 61 General Exclaim 63
Nexan 2000 68 Continental Conti Pro Contac 64
Dunlop Sport 5000 62 Bridgestone Potenza EL400 61
Firestone F560 68 FuzonZRI 67
General Diamonback 66 Riken Raptor 60
Falken Ziexx 512 60

99% of all OEM (M/C) rear tires were 69-72

On car tires being so "square"...

A car tire is not square edged or even flat when it is rolling. You can probably best describe it as having the profile of a half worn (4000-6000 miles) m/c tire. And it stays that way for its lifetime on the bike of 25,000-35,000 miles or more. Now who here would complain about the handling of a half worn bike tire? Check a few Youtube videos of the Darkside and you can see them at full speed and scraping the floorboards.

HUH?! So you are saying that to match a car tires traction footprint at full pressure you would have to release enough air from your m/c tire to make it unsafe? We agree on that point!

Next!
