Ok, to challenge some of the incorrect info just given, I'll correct it with researched info from the DS forum...

precisely, on the D.S. forum

as i stated earlier, those who have conspiricy theories on 9-11 websites aint gonna post something contrary to their line of thinking.

On tire hardness...

A Durometer measures the softness of tire rubber, the softer the tire the lower the number.

Durometer Readings: (all readings taken on same meter)

BFG Touring TA 67 Goodyear Triple Tread 69
General Altimax HP 61 General Exclaim 63
Nexan 2000 68 Continental Conti Pro Contac 64
Dunlop Sport 5000 62 Bridgestone Potenza EL400 61
Firestone F560 68 FuzonZRI 67
General Diamonback 66 Riken Raptor 60
Falken Ziexx 512 60

99% of all OEM (M/C) rear tires were 69-72

did they quote the figures for bike rear tyres? if so, kindly post them for our delictation

On car tires being so "square"...

A car tire is not square edged or even flat when it is rolling. You can probably best describe it as having the profile of a half worn (4000-6000 miles) m/c tire. And it stays that way for its lifetime on the bike of 25,000-35,000 miles or more. Now who here would complain about the handling of a half worn bike tire? Check a few Youtube videos of the Darkside and you can see them at full speed and scraping the floorboards.

have you seen the `footprintīthat is left by car tyres on a wet road when following them, or better still when theyīve just driven through some water then onto a dry road? full width footprint mate!
the part not in contact with the road will distort slightly outwards from centrifugal force, but the part in contact with the road stays flat.

BTW, if this fella darkside can scrape his running boards at 110mph (which i seriously doubt) whilst riding on a car rear, he should be racing for yamaha.

BigBoyinMS wrote:
HUH?! So you are saying that to match a car tires traction footprint at full pressure you would have to release enough air from your m/c tire to make it unsafe? We agree on that point!

Next!

no, i was making the point that i could reproduce wider than his alleged tyre tracks by lowering the pressure if i was doing it for photographic purposes.

you keep on referring to his videos, well watch them yerself mate! look at the contact point. the bike rises on the corner of the tyre! you cannot tell me that that having the contact areas out of line when cornering makes sense and enhances the handling! if it did, manufacturers and bike builders like myself wouldnt be fussed about wheel alignment, and bikes would come fitted with square section tyres.

sorry mate, but this guy darkside comes across as someone who has had a misguided idea and has gained a following from some folks who want to save a buck without having a clue about the safety aspects nor how the geometry of a single track vehicle should operate most effectively

LoL I knew you couldn't! But, neither can I sometimes.

But, I knew how this thread would turn out because car tire - m/c tire threads always turn out this way. LoL
We have to agree to disagree. You know it can't work or be safe; dozens of others are doing it and reporting great handling and tire life. Me, I'll probably run a car tire at some point just to see if it works for me.

Oh, as far as the hardness question on the m/c tires... this is what he wrote. It's the last line on hardness in the previous post.

I have been meaning to call my insurance provider(Geico)and ask about using a car tire. I just got off of the phone after speaking to them. They said that using a car tire would not be cause for cancellation or denial of a claim. And no, I'm not taking the word of a minimum wage telephone answerer. I asked for it in writing and I should have it in a week. It will be attached to my policy.

There seems to have been a considerable amount of real life try outs with this idea;

You Know just watched this Video and that Goodyear looks as round as a MC tire to me. Not all CT's have square profile.

I'm in, next time I change the rear tire I will go car tire. Why not, I am willing to sacrifice to see if its all true or not.
Looks like to me it will work, I mean that tire has to keep a truck or car in a corner with a pile more weight and G's.
Why wouldn't it work. Maybe its another government conspiracy.

Me too. I can't believe that it would really cause a handling problem and I believe that a CT is probably a more substantial tire than a MC tire. However I think close attention needs to be payed to what car tire is the right CT.
