sticky clutch syndrome .... 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi all,

I haven't gotten to ride for the past two weeks, but today I did So I go out and start up the star ... no problem! Starts on the first crank and idles well. I get on the bike, push the choke in, pull the clutch lever, put it into first ..... and she instantly dies With the clutch lever still pulled in, I try cranking it, but the whole bike moves. Its as if I was not pulling on the clutch lever at all! After jigging the shift lever up and down a bit, I finally get it back into neutral so I can restart, and when I put it in first again, no problem.

I have noticed that this always happens when the bike has been sitting a while (as in winter storage) but I usually ride more in the summer so this is a first for me. Should I be worried about this? would uisng an oil treatment help? Has anybody else experienced this?

Just curious ... and very happy to be riding today

Yep. The oil drains off the clutch and it gets "sticky". Let the engine warm up a little and pump the clutch a few times before putting it into gear after it's sat for a while and it'll be a little better.

bthomas's got the fix.

Common feature on the R* .... probably a Yamaha anti-theft option.

It's your scoot's way of saying you're not taking her out enough.

I don't know if it was my inexperience or what you are describing but I had something similar happen. Shortly after I purchased my Road Star I cranked it one morning let her warm for a short period and put her in gear and she choked off. Had a hell of a time getting back to neutral and once restarted i could not change gears. Felt like I had broke clutch cable so i put her up and drove my truck to work. Later after I got home every thing worked like nothing had happened. 2 Days later I switched to synthetic oil and haven't had a problem since.

You know, synthetic oil helped mine too. Still gets sticky after sitting but not as bad as with the dino oil. Never really thought about it until you mentioned it.
