Verdict is in - 33-tooth Pulley MPG 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
OK,

Here's an update for all those who asked about me putting a 33-tooth pulley on my '05 Silverado.

Pre-33-tooth pulley, I could expect about 41.8 MPG with day-to-day riding, speeds under 75 mph and usually under 65. On my long hauls to GA at intestate speeds 72-82 mph, I got around 34 mpg.

Figured out what I got on my 2,000-mile trip through New England with the 33-tooth pulley, using 12 fill ups for the calculation:

Overall average was 43.248 mpg or almost 1-1/2 mpg higher than my everyday average, but that included a few hundred interstate miles doing 70-82 mph. My low was 39.135 mpg on my last fill up (almost all interstate), which is roughly 5 mpg higher than the 32-tooth days...and my best was 45.261 mpg on a mostly two-lane day (35 to 60 mph), or about 3.5 mpg better than the previous average.

Thanks, Derek, for the pulley.

Conclusion, the 33-tooth did improve my gas mileage with virtually no loss to performance for my tame riding style. In fact, I like the way it feels a lot more. 50-60 mph in 4th gear is just cruising now, and I don't really need 5th gear until I hit about 75 on accel.

My riding style is so entirely different... I avoid highways as much as possible and ride back roads at under 50 in 4th. I have no windshield.

I typically get 46 mpg.

I'm seriously thinking of switching to a 31 tooth front pulley for a little more flexibility with my style of riding... and might even see a little mpg improvement if I do it.

Thanks for the update on the pulley.. Would love to find a 33 tooth for mine. Like you said I want less rev when on the highway and think the Roadstar should have come with a 6 speed trans.

Hope I can find one So far have not found one by searching web and so on.......

Not to hi jack your thread, but how would a 31 tooth pulley over all affect the bike as compared to a 33 tooth? I have the stock pulley on now and have been looking at that 31 hard. I just don't want to loose that blowing the interstate gas mileage.
Any thoughts??

I lucked out that someone saw an earlier post of mine about considering making the switch. He sold me hi stock 33-tooth from his 1600 that he'd replaced. Who knows, there might be some 1600 rider who has made the switch to a 31-tooth who might have one to part with.

31 tooth will give more low end, not really kill the top end as the R* has enough room but you will be up in the RPM cruising the highway.. If you do a lot of highway cruising like soba, and myself not a good choice.. but if you do slower cruising 50-60 regularly and accel to higher speeds for short bursts you will like the increased pull that the 31 tooth will give you.
I drive aggressively, and would like the 31 tooth, but do all highway everyday and need the extra gear up top to keep the rpm's down and gas mileage up.

Thanks soba for the 33 tooth mileage info, glad too hear its helping..
