I had my son on his first minibike at age 3 and he loved it. Some moms don't seem to mind (mine didn't) and I believe that the earlier you start them, the better they learn. Sure, they're gonna take a few spills but they're usually having too much fun to care. Keep them on the dirt though!

My now 12 year old daugther starting riding with me at about 9 I guess. As soon as I thought she understood the danger of not paying attention or hanging on. she loves to ride now.

I've taken my 6, 8, 11. 13, and 17 year olds for rides around town. I get concerned that the little ones will slip off even though I have a sissy bar with backrest. They are so little they don't touch it, but try to hang on to my big waist. I have a small full face helmets and it is a burden for the little one. I think it weighs more than she does. I probably wouldn't want to ride with them on a major hiway for any distance, because if something happened to them I'd be real bad off.

I probably would prefer a nice passenger seat with cozy arm rests to keep them in and safe.

Started my son at 3 yrd old on a Honda z50, soloed it with really no problem. He was rippin around on a 12" two wheeler at 2-1/2, cut the peddles off for him so he could just paddel away at will!
He was racing MX at 14....and still is.
BTW i think MX at a young age is extreamly helpful for riding on the road later in life..you learn a tremendos amount of respect for a motorcycle by riding at a young age
It's all a memory now..he was riding a Vaulkrie at 17 and now takes my 1700 for day trips at 18....he is very mature rider

I take my grandson riding with me when he's here, he's 9. He is crazy about my scoot, he'd rather go to town on it than anything else. Sometimes I'd rather have him riding with me over the wife , shhhhh, she's sleeping had to look over my shoulder to make sure she's not looking. He sits there holding on, and saying go faster lol.

Here's an article from Motorcycle Cruiser that hit the nail squarely on the head for you.

Kids and Riding

Can't wait for my little one to be ready to ride with me.

Hope this helps.....

I started my kids out about 5 and 7. I had an Electra Glide at the time and would put both of them behind me. They both had the small helmets and loved it. You should have seen the looks we got (yes, it is legal in Missouri, I checked). The only problem I have now is my son is 14 and loves to ride....... he is 6'-0 and 200 pounds! I think he will be ready for his own bike as soon as he gets old enough. Interestingly enough he is my best rider, the wife and daughter still cant keep there butt's still at a stoplight
