I figured he would have at least 2 links to info on the new valves. Don't have anything up cuz I'm right? That's it ain't it? I finally got something right and he can't stand it.

Studying the parts listings for 2005 and 2006
There does seem to be different exhaust and intake valves... same valve springs inner and outter.... and same valve guides.... whether ordering valves under the part numbers for 2005 are superceded or not Im not sure
It appears there different head assembly part numbers for the two years
Maybe the valve seats have changed??? And that is why simply changing the valves may not work??? and like Doc said the fix is reamed valve guides and new springs
Maybe Doc can jump in on this ...

Its getting harder and harder to trip you up Musky

Post edited by: Pop Rivet, at: 2006/11/14 20:36

I'm learnin Thanks to you guys. It seems like reaming and stronger springs is the norm. But that would just amount to a clean up and then stronger springs to keep pushing things when it comes back would it not? I was curious if the new valves would prevent the return of the problem or just prolong the inevitble. Personally I think lowering the oil level and leaning it out is the first best step. Avoid getting it instead of fixing it. But I guess there isn't any for sures when it comes to this.

Yer right.. use of proper gas, oil level and tuning prevents carbon buildup

MMO wasnt invented for the R* and even the best machined engine will carbon up under those conditions

I believe the valves and the heads are both 'refined'.

But it may be the change in the valve that will solve the problem as the 'refined' heads did not help much. The 'new' valves have a wider face so they have more contact with the head.

I believe Yamaha originally just reamed the guides out. When that didn't help they change the heads and then that lead to the new valves.

Just speculating here as this seems to be the progression of 'fixes'.

Can't argue there. But the stock value sure has went up since 99.

There sure does. Be good for everyone if one of these fixes actually fixed it. But maybe it has. Time will tell. Although I think a lot of people have wised up and lowered the oil and leaned it out so it might be hard to tell if the changes worked or the people made it work in spite of the motor mistakes.

Just out of curiosity, what further damage do you think may occur by continuing to ride with that partially stuck/sticky exhaust valve?

You're going to try taking a left turn across traffic, you lose power half way across, and get creamed by a truck.

You're entering a frewway and you twist the gas to hit the opening in traffic, you lose power, and get creamed by a truck.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/11/15 06:54
