Well BB, took the shield off and had a most pleasurable ride. Lot's of bugs, though.

You're correct, of course, that without the noise reflecting off the windshield the bike can be seen for what it is. A big, lazy, quality built machine. I really enjoyed it.

Threw the shield back on for a lengthy freeway ride last night, had earplugs and my brain bucket on, and the bike is great that way too.

I've released the "panic" button for now and I'm going to have that 600 miles on her either today or tomorrow. A local hardware has the 20w50 Amsoil Syn motorcycle oil for about $42/gallon. That or Mobil 1....whatdaya think?

Amsoil is better supposedly, usually harder to get though. I think that's why more people go to Mobil 1 V-Twin. Both are good though.

Glad it worked out. Both are good oils , Mobil 1 is more readily available. 'Course , if the local hardware store is going to keep Amsoil in stock , go for it. BB

Don't go by the manual for the amount of oil to put in her. Don't put more than 4 quarts in.

I have 30k on my roadie and she still knocks from time to time. Mostly when the motor is hot or I am holding a steady RPM. I don't pay attention to it most of the time to be honest with you. I have found that the bike likes to be ridden sort of hard as far as RPM's are concerned. I hardly ever shift early, I usually let it wind up a bit and then shift it makes the shifts smoother. IMHO.
Next time it starts knocking either up shift or down shift depending on conditions and it should quiten up.

Ride Safe,
Jordan

Thanks all,

Yeah, I think I will knock out the 600 tomorrow with a 140 mile round trip to no where since I have the day off and we are living the dream weather wise here in south eastern PA.

I'll pick up the oils and filter on the way home and perform the transfusion.

Krohme Werks slip ons should be here day after tomorrow, and at least the hardware for my OEM lowers. I've got some plexi glass to rig something up until the yami stuff arrives. Heck, mine might be better. Gotta have lowers if you're going to have that windshield, IMHO.

So, right: 4 qt's, shooting for middle of the dipstick.

MidStar, first off, welcome. The gentlemen here have a huge wealth of information regarding your bike, and truth be told I would trust their knowledge and experience because.. well, they know what's going on. Anyway, as for the break in, you might want to have a little read at this thread http://roadstarclinic.com/component/option,com_fireboard/Itemid,187/func,view/id,120789/catid,13/limit,10/limitstart,0/ more specifically the break-in theory link http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm after hearing that you were wanting to baby it.. anyway, worth a read whether or not you decide to execute it. Welcome to the clinic

Dan

Well...shoot, it's a little late for that break-in theory. I've got 650+ on it now and I changed the oils (engine and transfer) and I'm starting to roll it on a little more. In other words, mine is basically getting the factory recommended routine.

It's too bad....I would have been open to doing that procedure. Then again, if I had followed that path and the bike knocked like it does...which it probably would have done anyway....then I would always wonder if it was my fault for not following Yamaha's procedure. This way, at least I'm fairly certain mine is just a knocker, or they all knock, or whatever, but it's not something I caused. Phew....tired of thinking about it!

On a really, really positive note, my Krhome Werks tapered slip-ons arrived today. I had them on in less than an hour. Unbelievable! They sound freekin' amazing! Quiet enough through town at about 1/16th throttle, and then they open up like gattling guns on the open road. $111 shipped to my door....couldn't be more pleased for the $$.
