Helmut I'll say this with respect, "thank goodness you're in Canada". I think your govt is more than welcome to tell people what they are competent enough to drive. Here in the US though, we pretty much can decide for ourselves. I personally do NOT want a govt that has more control over my life than what they already do. (and that itself could be a whole other debate)

Very fortunate young man. He is lucky he did not get run over. Good for you Curt to put that chick in her place.

I know this is going to raise some feathers but here goes-- I think this is the place where government needs to step in. It is becoming very clear in both of our countries that these young guns are not going to play nice on these machines. As we all know if you give a kid a powerful toy he will abuse it at some point. So I think there needs to be some very restictive rules put in place on the purchase of or power capabilities of these machines.
Here in Ontario we have graduated licensing but that makes no difference in the behavior from what I have seen. So to detune these machines electronically at the factory level may be the answer.
Here a young man can expect to pay upwards of $3000-5000 per year for insurance on an R1 or R6 but that seems to be no deterent to craziness.

I watched a dealer tell a guy about 19 years old to take it easy on his new rear tire. Kid said naw no problem. Well he slid across 4 lanes of traffic as he pulled out of the dealership wrecking his bike and himself.

All too often on the Dallas roads. And the general public view of sportbike riders is terrible because of the few. I had a sportbike for years, and I have known my share of those that have gone down. I lost my best friend to a R1 crash. I still miss the speed, and the agility, and the twisties!

The biggest problem with sportbikes is the "its cool! I want one" attitude of young, inexperienced riders. Even a 600 can be WAY too much bike for them. Hell, I had a 600 and with just a twist could have it standing in 3 gears.

As for insurance...I was paying liability only at $130 year for a 2004 Yamaha R6. Full coverage was $2300/year! My 2007 Roadie is $480/year for full coverage!

Agree with houston, we dont need any more goverment regualtion. How about we teach them how to ride and the results that can happen (classes maybe?). It starts at home with our own sons and daughters.........

I was on the way home last week and going in the opposite direction on the highway was a crotch rocket coming down the on ramp, he pulled a wheelie on the highway at 5pm in rush hours traffic and rode it as far as I could see in my rear view mirror, all I could think was what an idiot. Although I must admit, I dont know if he was young or old I still didnt like the thought I was being lumped in with him in the minds of every cager around me..........

Jason,
Where do you get your coverage at that rate? Mine here in AZ is considerable higher than that.

Thanks,

I have liability only for $100,000.00/$300,000.00 & $50,000.00. Last year the premium was $45.00 this year it is $42.00.

Down here in the U.S. Darwin usually takes care of the real idiots on motorcycles (regardless of style). At least in GA, the driving test (for cagers) and riding test (for bikes) should be WAY more difficult than it is.

The cagers usually don't kill themselves if they screw up. But the folks who "pass" the test and get a license, but still can't ride need to be culled out. A couple of women (no offense) passed the test and were issued a card to take to the DMV for a motorcycle endorsement I wouldn't let ride 20 feet. But they could do the figure 8 box, the turn, she stop...all that is required to get permission from the state to fire up a bike and hit the road. I'm just afraid a good many do literally that: hit the road.

I'm all for keeping the governments snoot out of my personal life. That said, I do expect the government to take a role in ensuring that all those who I must share the pubic highway with are actually qualified to be there.3

Houston/Mark7 - Here Here... Darwin is pretty danged good at his job. Govt. - protect me and mine from terrorists, and give me back my freaking money instead of finding new ways to spend it.
