I did an experiment... 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago
O.K, I know were debating on causes of SVS but, I've had it for the last couple weeks, until I did the CVF..(curt valve fix). When I changed the oil, I got out 5 quarts instead of the 4qts. I put in it. I figured with the shock treatment and all the spraying of the valves with the deep creep, it was just all the carbon and gunk that got in the oil, diluting, etc. Well, I remember when I talked to Yami HQ last year , they told me thier techs were unhooking the recirculation hose..(that puts the oil back over the rear valve)...and let the engine run till' no more came out the hose. Then they drained the oil and only had 3.3 quarts in the engine. They told me to only put 3.3 in when I changed it next time. NOT! I need a little more than that for cooling and such , so I only use 4. Now, After I got rid of the SVS last week and the bike ran great for a couple days, I got an idea..I put another quart of oil in the bike. I know..I are a dumb arse, but I had to know what would happen. Now I have 5 qts. in it, and I headed for town. 20 miles up the highway and then about 5 miles of city driving....the rear cyl. was huffin' again! I could hear it plain as day. Not as bad as the little sound clip I put up earlier, but it was on it's way. So, I took it home (20 miles) and it was a little worse when I got it there. Drained the oil...(got the 5 qts. out)... put back 3.75 qts. this time, put a little seafoam in it and hammered the hell out of it. Within an hour it was gone. Its been a few days now and no sign of it, even with easy city drivin'..which usually starts bringin' it on for me. So, just a note... 4 qt. limit is a must! And the proper jetting must be done to keep it away.

Interesting and better you than me I use 4 qts every time and have never (knock on woodlike data bytes) had an issue. My bike runs great, gets good gas mileage and cured world hunger

Yeah, on my project my oil tank is smaller than stock...I've pondered many nights about the ill effects of running her light on oil...now I'm not so worried...
With the stock transfer case and oil tank removed, I'm unsure of the actual engines true oil requirements.

I have a 2qt. tank now...plus lines, plus engine capacity...how do you think that compares to the 4qt. method??

A little misprint...I had about 50 miles on it before I went into town...either way, it didnt take long. Yea Cougar, my bikes prone to it, I figured what do I have to lose. Funny how just a little thing like that can screw it up that quick. I'm goin' on a poker run today, so that will test it out good...but like I said no problems since I drained it again, put the 3.75 qts. in, and have been ridin' for a few days.. I like my bike again!

Thanks for taking the time to verify Yamaha's recommendation to run less oil.

It would seem that SVS can be caused either by a single or a combination of factors. That's probably why after some folks 'fix' one of the problems they still have SVS return.

I bet you would be surprised at how little oil these bikes would run on. The majority of our cooling is going to be from the cooling fins on the engine. With out an actual oil cooler, the engine fins are going to be cooling the engine and the oil.
That stuff going back to the tank isn't cooling it, its just a reserve. I suppose there are areas that are generating less heat than others where the oil has a chance to find a stable temperature. But in all honesty I bet with a good synthetic oil, you could run that thing on less than two quarts of oil.
