It gets wired to the coil, which requires pulling off the fuel tank. I put a tach on my 05 as well, and had the same exact question. I hadn't pulled the tank off the bike at that point and didn't realize how easy it really is, so I had the dealer install it. I ended up pulling off the tank to play with the carb, realized I could have wired it myself, and kicked myself for it. If I remember right, the coil is right on the upper part of the frame right under where your speedo would be.
