Hi anyone change your oils to Synthetic on road star? Did you feel the different? I just took my road star to do the recall work on the transmission and want to know if it is best that put Synthetic oils on my road star. Went they take the transmission off do they need to get the motor oil out too?
Thanks

Trans and engine share the same oil, most think that dino is best for breaking in new rings.. do a search here on syn oils and you will be reading for months...

Part of the transmission recall kit is new rings. So they'll be tearing the motor apart. Lots of people use syn. I would say the vast majority.

I agree with Flashback! Its good to break in the new rings with dino oil. After the break in period it would be fine to make the change to synthetic. I use Mobil 1 V twin 20-50, and what I mostly noticed is that it quiets the motor noises down, and seems to run and shift a little smoother. You can also change the Transfer case oil to synthetic also. Hope this helps!

"Trans and engine share the same oil?" Doesn't the trans require a heaver oil, such as Mobil 1 75/90 and the engine Mobil 1 V-Twin 20/50?

Midnight, you're thinking transfer case oil. Transmission and engine share oil. Transfer case uses the heavier viscosity oil.

Ditto for me as well!

The viscosity or thickness of 20w-50 weight syn oil is the same thickness as gear 75w 90 oil just a different rating system..
an SAE 30 engine oil has approximately the same viscosity as a SAE 85W gear oil. ...
shear qualities of the syn 50 oils is as good as gear oil..that is why SYN 3 harley oil is use in all three cavities transmission... engine... and transfer case...
and you can use mobil v-twin in the transfer case
the use of synthetic oil does not effect breakin... with newer ceramic composite cyl and rings...

AH! Got it. I was thinking transmission and Transfer are one in the same. Hopefully I didn't steer anyone off in the wrong direction.

Sure would be nice to add high compression pistons and better valve springs while they was in there!
