Backfire 1 Month, 1 Week ago
ok here goes, after doing the stage 3 mod last year My bike will backfire on decel. Usually its just if i am in a low gear or something but it shoots about a 5 foot flame. This is not only embarrassing but I think it could potentially harm the engine flaming like that lol. My bike is Bone stock. never touched the carb at all, factory airbox, factory pipes stage 3 modded(gutted). I'm guessing the answer is to adjust the pms screw a touch but I know nothing about carbs. I'm scared to death to touch it lol. I know that I will probably have to drill out the cover over the pms right? now supposing I was under the carb on the bike, which way would I turn the screw and how much would I turn it. would I turn it in or out. Its not that big of a problem but it scares the daylights out of a buddy of mine that rides behind me lol. Giant flames are not fun in the dark for tailgaters.

You would most likely have to turn it out. Have you checked real good for exhaust leaks?

Flames .....

- exhaust leak
- fouled plug (usually one)
- sticky valve

Ok, now you got me worried doc lol. been watching to see if you replied yet. I am almost convinced though its got something to do with the mixture. My logic behind that is the bike never backfired ever with stock pipes. The night I did the stage 3 I took it for a ride, POW. started immediately after stage 3 mod on the factory exhaust. Plus with svs wouldnt the bike run bad when I first start it? I can start it and take off almost immediately and its smooth as silk. Its only on decel in a low gear, really winding the bike that it backfires. I can get it to do it cold idling too but it takes a couple twists of the throttle to get it to do it. It sorta misses for a second and then the next rev, POW. I'll be up all night worryin now lol. Might go spend some time with her, maybe some chicken soup in the carb. I just hope its not svs. are the 07's prone to it?

I've read the 1700s can be more prone to SVS than the 1600s LE, but if you're not noticing any loss of power, etc., then I might try looking somewhere else too. The stage 3 reduces the backpressure a lot, is my understanding. I remember Doc saying in another thread the popping is occuring even with the stock pipe setup, but because it's heavily baffled we never hear it. When I changed to slipons I got a lot of popping on hard decel until I plugged the AIS. It still pops, but not nearly like it did. But mine never flamed (as far as I know). Have you checked those plugs yet?

Havent checked them yet. Thats my next thing. I might try to see if I can do it tomorrow. this is the first bike I've ever owned so its all a bit scary taking stuff off. I been reading up on removing the AIS too to see if that helps. I have a printed version of the service manual. Hopefully that will give me the info to remove the plugs and check them. I'm assuming I'll have to remove the tank to get to them. I've just let this go on too long and its time i fixed it. I dont want to do permanent damage to the bike.

What all did you have to do plugging the AIS? Do the instructions in the tech section work for it and also what size plugs did you have to use. I appreciate ya replying to this thread and helping me out.

When I installed the Shogun Slashers on my '07 it popped like crazy. Disconnected the small vacuum line going to the intake & plugged it with a bolt I found in my junk box that was a little larger than the tubing. Removed the AIS system & took the straightest of the large rubber hoses that connect to the chrome tubes going to each cylinder. I cut that tube in half & attached one end of each piece back onto each chrome tube & secured them with a leftover clamp. Then I used 2 5/8 bolts to screw into the other end on each tube & clamped them. Voila! No more popping! When it gets too cold to ride I'll remove the chrome tubes & install the AIS blockoff plates.

Get this for your 07' AIS KIT You don't need the plug kind. I have this kit from them and it came with instructions. It's really easy!
It makes a big difference with popping!
