While your checking things look at your choke knob and see if it bottoms out when pushed in. If you don't have a slight gap when pushed in...
go to the Tech articles here and read the free fix for stretched choke cables article.
I trimmed the knob on my stock 1600 R* and picked up several MPG right away

Sounds like most are getting better than I am in the mpg range. I do not know what the jets are in the carb because the pipes were on the bike when I bought it. I am going to try to get a big air kit and will have to change them out then.

Most jet kits will have you running too rich. When you go to change them out, there are several members here that can give you a real good starting point with the jets.

Why do we all worry about what kind of milage we are getting. If it is running good with a good set up and no SVS then ride on. If our worst gas milage is 35 a gallon then we are still beating 60o/o of the cars.

Hey we got these babys for the fun of it and the pleasure. I can get anywhere between 32-51 MPG depending on what I am up to. 55-65 MPH straight freeway 47-51 MPG, 75-90 MPH straight freeway 32-38 MPG, 40-70 MPH mixed freeway/streets 41-45 MPG. If you are an avid throttle blimper then knock off 2-5 miles per gallon. Hope this helps a little.

I only run 87 in it.... I try to stick to 100% gasoline fuels if I can also. My millage is all over the map. Long trips I got around 45 or a little higher.. If I ride around town or get on it allot It drops into the low 30's. allot depends on how you ride, one up or two up... windshield.. head wind.. tail wind.. lol

I just fill it up when it's empty.

I have never got that good of mileage. The best was around 40 when new. I have v&h pies and K&N. Last trip I had to stop at 99 miles and put 3.9 gallons in. Took it back to the dealer and they said the rubber seat on ( i thing throttle rod was wore out allowing gas to flow unrestricted.) New plugs again, put new seat in and leaned it out. Now it will not idel right and if you are in neutral and open throttle to about 1500 rpms it wants to run rough. Called dealer and they said they probably set it to lean bring it in. best I get when it rub\ns right is 37.

I am getting about what Topnotch is getting 47-50 with the same kind of driving. 60-65 on the highway and 50 on country roads going to work with a 50 mile round trip every day. I have Roadhouse Dualies and a K&N filter and as far as I know no jetting. FOG

I think gas mileage will vary on how and where you drive. I live in Northern New Mexico, I average between 35 - 50 MPG. The elevation here will vary from 6,500 here in Las Vegas and up to 10,000 on some of the mountain passes. We take a trip to Ft. Hood yearly and get great gas mileage going down but comming back it drops quite a bit. My 2 cents. Keep the rubber to the road.

Re:Gas Mileage 3 Years, 7 Months ago
Depends on how I ride.

I was averaging, normal riding with a mix of highway and two-lane, about 40-42 mpg. Have gotten as low as 34 or 35 mpg on 10 hours of interstate at 70-85 mph and as high as 51 mpg (one time) riding local, slower roads.

Since I changed to the 33-tooth front pulley, I'm getting 42-44 average.

Keep in mind my air intake and pipes are stock, as is the jetting. If I ever change the intake and rejet, I'd probably get better mpg.
