I was told by the local Yamaha dealer that if I used any other oil filter other than Yamaha and something happened to the engine, the warranty would be void. Then he rambled on about the amount of oil that passes thru the filter and how other filters are not designed for the bike. Sounds like a bunch of bull to me.
Also,K&N air filters can be found on e-bay.

There are a lot of threads on “do it yourself” on here, even some on what jack to buy. A good first thing to do is go to Sears and get yourself a motorcycle jack, the Yellow one or the Red and Black.
Then get a little tool box that will be only for the bike and get some metric tools, including a set of metric

T allen wrenches.
Open and box set wrenches
Socket set – ¼ inch drive, and 3/8 drive

IF you’re going to be taking your tire off, you’re going to need a couple of bigger wrenches.

You can do it, and the money your going to save is nothing compared to knowing it got done right and how your going to feel by doing it.

do a search for that part number. Most online motorcycle dealers should carry them. I know phatperformanceparts does. I usually clean my k&n filter like every other oil change.

I suppose you could keep written records and keep receipts of what you've done. Might help fetch some extra $$$ if you show a log and receipts.

Thanks

Right on with the 4qts. The K&N is a good investment and unless you ride in a very dusty area you just need to clean it once a year. Just cleaned mine last month at 30,000 miles. I do keep a log of all the work I do myself, and any the dealer might do,which at this point is just putting new tires on.

Any quality oil filter is fine.......and that Can not be used against a person in a warranty situation. It's the law. BB

Thanks to all of you who responded. Yes I am going to start doing my own work. I already have the metric tools, everything I will need except for the bigger wrenches to take the wheels off. Also already have the lift, was only using it to lift the bike for cleaning the rims and underneath. Next oil change will also be a new K&N.

It is, besides, that should be covered under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

Like every other legal document. Things can get sticky.

"Most of the time, tie-in sales provisions are not really allowed. These kinds of provisions would require a buyer of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product if they want to be eligible to receive a solution to a problem under the warranty. The following are examples of prohibited tie-in sales provisions.

In order to keep your new Proctor Silex Coffee Maker warranty in effect, you must use genuine Proctor Filters. Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Company, will actually voids this warranty.

While you cannot use a tie-in sales provision, your warranty also doesn’t have to cover use of replacement parts, repairs, or maintenance that is inappropriate for your product. The following is an example of a permissible provision that excludes coverage of such things.

While necessary maintenance or repairs on your Pioneer Stereo System can be performed by any company, you recommend that buyers use only authorized Pioneer dealers. Improper or incorrectly performed maintenance or repairs will void this warranty as well."

It comes down to did the filter cause the problem or did you do something wrong while installing the filter. A court would have to decide that. Don't you love it!

So, in a nutshell, should we riders with existing warranties be changing our own oil, using our Mobil-1 synthetic, and installing our chrome K&N oil filters on our bikes if we want to maintain the warranty?
