Only had mine for a month now, it was new with 0.3miles on it, I now have 1350 on it. I only live 3.5 miles from where I work, so you can tell I've taken the long way home a couple of times.
I have to run my pickup truck for work, so the bike sits most of the day. It's getting cold here in Green Bay as well, and I won't ride once the roads are salted. Having fun trying to keep vital parts warm and dry.

The owner said he's run AMSOIL in it since new and that's why it's lasted for 160K? Does anyone else recommend that? I've never heard of it before.

Amsoil is very respected. It can be hard to get from a retail store. You can get it from a distributor. Check their website out. www.amsoil.com.

I had this same question and was kinda concerned, then I ran into two other road star riders at a BBQ joint not long ago. They asked about my star and I the same back to them. One was on a 2000 and the other gentlman was on a 2002. I nearly choked on a bite when the gentleman with the 2000 said he had just over 168,000. Then the other guy tells me he has 142,000. Both had bought their bikes new. As we talked, I learned both had been on MB 1 Vtwn and the 2000 had actully suffered a oil pump shaft break at just under 20K on a road trip. He siad he was sitting at a light heard a noise and then the lifters began to rattle. Rented a U-haul to get home, tore it down and found the shaft broke, replaced only the shaft, checked out the rest, and added an oil pressure guage. He later had the frame break and replaced it at around 50K. The gentleman with the 2002 said he had no major mechanical issues just huge hemorids from riding so much. I asked them both to join this site and share thier experiences. Like the miles on thier bikes, one said he did good to figure out how to operate fuel pump buttons at gas stations and the other said he gets mocked when he whips out a check book to pay for something. After checking out thier rides and seeing the odometers I rode off with a warm fuzzy feeling about my road star and the years to come. They both insisted the key was good oil, timely preventive maintenance, and keep the shiny side up.

Yep... keys to success with aiding the longivity of any vehicle... timely filters and fluid changes., plus not treating the machine like a borrowed mule is always a good idea. In other words, treat it right and it will treat you right in the long run.

I would have said it, totally straightfaced, just for the reaction. "Yep. Recycled car oil. They let me have all I want for free, at the dump. People bring in their old oil. I go in with empty quart bottles, fill 'em up, and then go home and change my oil."


And then I would have grinned and burst out laughing.
