LE, the back plugs mean you're probably running a little rich. Remember Musky's Free Choke Fix, where you trim a little off the back of the enricher knob so it leaves a tiny gap between it and the bracket? I did that and now have that tiny gap. Since we both have the same year, I'll bet you can trim a little off yours and lean the carb out a little bit. Might be enough to make a difference. Just a thought.

DOH! Musky beat me to it. Again.

Gap them .032 to.035. I gap mine at the first one and it runs fine.

looks like your running alittle rich on the rears.have you done any adjustments from stock. PMS could be tweeked, brand of fuel can foul them.
Fuel filter might have dirt in it. Doc Musky and curt can help you more.,float might be to high.

when you put your plugs in use some anti-sieze on the threads allows them to not bind in the threads.

again go slow take your time and read the manual.Others hear will give you better info. GS.

Sorry but I missed the thread before it got pushed off the list.

The previous posts seem to have you covered. If the plugs are fouled you would of course be dumping a lot of unburned mix into the pipes where if ignites causing the backfiring.

Musky I will do the trim. I havent done it yet. I havent checked the float level, never been into a carb. I was thinking that I needed to adjust the pms. I'll put the new plugs in tomorrow and do the choke knob mod and try it from there. Also removed the AIS today so maybe that will help as well. Thank you guys for responding so quick, worried me to death when I saw those plugs. I sure didnt want to put em back in there that way.

Ok guys, this is the original thread where I was talking about my bike backfiring on heavy decel and shooting a 2 foot flame when it did. I checked the best I knew how for exhaust leaks, put some bolts back in for intake leaks(might have been leaking). A couple of folks suggested that I check my plugs. Well I did the AIS removal today and while the tank is off I removed my plugs. It doesnt look good. Especially the plugs on the rear. I took a pic of them but you cant see it really well. In the pic, the plugs are stuck in a box as they came out of the bike. So it would be like sitting in the seat. they are arranged exactly in the spots they came out of. The bottom two are the rear left and right, the top two are the front left and right. Can someone please look at these and give me some insight. The rear two were almost black but it looked like the electrode was still barely visible. Not wet, just black soot. The front left was a little black but looked way better than the rear. the one that looked the best was the front right. It was like a whitish gray. I left the tank off after the AIS removal and left the plugs out(put rags in the holes till I put em back. I am going to buy another set of plugs(same as stock) tomorrow. This bike doesnt even have a full 5000 miles on it yet. Can anyone tell me what would make these plugs look so bad. Also, can anyone tell me the gap for the new plugs so I'll have that ready. Thanks for your time, Nick

The top right plug in the pic looks good to me the others need the same angle where you can see the threads and the electrodes to be read properly....Coug

When I did the stage 3 mod that would have made the bike leaner wouldnt it because of the extra air or am I wrong? Thats all I've done to it. Never touched the carb, stock airbox. I plan to do what you guys recommended tomorrow. Choke knob fix, gap em right, antiseize. Going to Advance in the morning for the plugs anyway. I would say the plugs are whats causing the flames but like you guys have said I have to find out whats making the plugs get that way in the first place too.

Yeah I had a heck of a time taking a pic of em. The others look black on the sides and on the electrode. Funny thing is the bike was running good besides backfiring on a hard decel.

Put your new plugs in and trim the choke nob. Try that first. then if it's still popping then you might look at the PMS. Don't worry there's always someone here that will help. Keep us informed. GS.

Re:Pulled my Plugs Finally 3 Years, 3 Months ago
Yeah I just checked out Musky's write up on his mod. Looks simple and easy to understand. I may even go back out there tonight and do it. I've never had that cable out of the bracket, tonight was the first time I have ever moved it(had to remove the fuel pump assembly to remove AIS tubing). But that doesnt mean someone didnt mess it up at the factory or the dealer. Cant hurt to try it. If this fails I plan to change the stock airbox and the pipes this winter anyway so I'll check the float level and adjust the pms when I tear into the carb to rejet. Hopefully though this will do the trick.
