X-mas Bonus = NEW PIPES !! 5 Years, 5 Months ago
Hello everyone ! As you probably gathered from the title, I received a nice Christmas Bonus this year and will be spending a small portion of it on NEW PIPES for my '05 Midnight Cdn.

I was hoping to get some feedback on what pipes everyone is running and opinions on the pros/cons/loudness/sound quality/ease of installation , etc. I like the look of a long drag pipe, but I also like the sound & power gains of a 2-1 style. Also, I'd love to know if you have installed an aftermarket "blackbox" and what the benefits are.

Opinions ?

I have a set of Roadhouse Doolies in transit as we type. Of course we have'nt received mail since Thursday out here, but I did see a UPS truck on the streets yesterday. I will certainly give you a hands on opinion once they are installed.
My best advice for now is to Google Road Star Exhaust and spend some time checking it out, and of course take advice from Clinic folk.

Ruprect--

Well, I'm really happy with my Hard Krome 3" Big Straights. Looks of a drag pipe (sorta), they end flush at the end of the rear tire, fit & finish is great, and if you want a nice, smooth quieter pipe, these are NOT the pipes for you! I still have the removable baffles in, and a good throttle blip sets off car alarms. As I've mentioned in other posts, the instructions say it's a two-person job for installation. Don't be like me--believe the instructions. It'll go much quicker, and you'll save on beer cost.

I have the Speedstar competition ignition module, but just haven't had the time to put it in yet...

Merry Christmas!

I had a set of Cobra long shotguns put on. Everyone tells me they are loud, but to me they are a good mellow sound. Along with a jet kit, they really make the bike bring out it's true power. This thing will get up and go, especially when you push it through the gears. I love taking off and twisting the throttle up, you will be at 85 before you look down at the speedo, then it just settles in to 5th. Perfect for getting on to the Interstate, where everyone seems to try and crowd you out.

That's tough.

Look to the style you like first, then try to hear them if possible.

I have the ProPipe and the Baron's Too Nasty exhaust. The Baron has a much deeper tone to it but out of the box the are much louder. The bike had a better torquie feel with the ProPipe on until I modified the Baron pipes.

Excellent fit and finish on the ProPipe.

Doc, what did you do to the Baron pipes, and what effect did it have ? I'm hoping to try and achieve the look of a long drag pipe with at least some of the increased torque of a 2-1 pro-pipe. I have a feeling the reason a lot of people wind up increasing the redline of their bikes is to make up for torque losses due to "open pipes".

Has anyone tried the Yamaha Speedstar 2-1 pipe ?

Does anone know the differences (if any) between the Cobra 2-1 and the Vance & Hines 2-1 (or if they even offer a V&H 2-1 for the 1700) ??

Tanks for the input gang ! Keep it coming !

Sir Lancelot - what type of gas milage are you getting? I have the same setup, getting about 37-38 but I think I can do better. BTW just put on a pair of the Cobra slash cut tips. The extend the pipes all the way to the back of the rear wheel and add a really nice look Check em out on the Cobra site.

On another note, what do the baffles do? What if you remove them?

Getting between 40 to 46 depending on how hard I stay in the throttle. The pipes make you want to twist on it just to hear em sing. Putting around easy seems so hard to do with the Roadie, it just begs to be throttled.

Check out my website. I added restrictive baffles to my Barons to make then quieter and to provide some back pressure.

I was amazed at the difference before and after installing the baffles.

Sir Lance, thanks for the input. I have go to figure out what is wrong with my setup. The dealer installed the pipes and the jet kit. Milage went down to about 32! I brought it back and they said even though they had followed the setup per the jet kit, they made some changes. Now up to 37 but I thing I am leaving lots of MPG behind.............

Merry Christmas, just waiting for the kids to go to sleep so we can put Santa gifts under the tree.
