5th intake, UPDATE Ben Herr. 3 Years, 6 Months ago

The update to this dilemma is on page 3.
5th intake,
I didn't want to hi jack that other thread, so here ya all go,
I'll entertain any story, suggesion, tip, experience, even maybe some voo doo! Just to get this thing to run right.
Yep ran like a Top after the 3rd one for 1000 miles and then went south, then they re-did the entire valve train, new parts, glass blasted and cleaned, set it all back up methodically pulling every trick in the book to ensure the intake would not leak, 1000 miles later, leaking again, I am so sick of it, it's surely a lemon and I am about to go that route. 5 intakes? Out of the entire 13.6 K miles on this bike, It's only ran like it should 10% of the time.
Anyone have any ideas why it would keep leaking over and over and over? Always seems to be the rear Jug (1) Also seems when the weather is warmer it shows up.
I have a ride planed this weekend, and a parade for Veterans day. Shop took it right in and started on it right away, They even seem to be frustrated with it, they really did take extra precautions to prevent it from leaking this time.
This is like 1 intake a month and some serious repairs from going so long with it leaking.
I overheard the mechanics talking about having a problem with rear jug running rich and they both tried to get it even with the front and it was giving wacky readings, Like some type of special tool they use that measures this somehow. They were saying it would read right once and then next time with no changes it would read something else. 2 mechanics got the same results.
The plugs on that cylinder foul out, front is like - perfect!
I'm seriously holding Yamaha responsible, This shop has put 110% into getting it going right.
Ya know it runs pretty good on one Jug though.

If your talking stock intake it's my opinion that every one of them should be lapped and oversize O rings put on before they get put on the bike.

Yep all under warranty and yep all stock. Hard to spend $$ for aftermarket parts when it hasn't ran right from the start. I'll mention this tip to them. MC

Yeah I feel ya too. I've had problem after problem too. Pretty annoying, had the bike 5 months and only have 2000 miles on it.

I'd make sure they do the following:
- leakdown test (hot and cold)
- compression test (hot and cold)
- change out o-rings and hoses on AIS system, or better yet disable it at the cylinders for now.
- check all vacuum lines, fittings, etc for leaks. Better yet just disable what isn't absolutly necessary and replace the rest & clamps too.
When they rebuilt your valve train, did they replace the guides too or just the valves ? No sense putting good vales into bad guides. I'd have them install a brand new, complete head. I'd also have them check the cam, pushrods and rockers too.
Good Luck, keep us posted.

Wait a minute, if you are running rich them it shouldn't be an air leaking problem. Air leaks will make you lean, and will likely be worst when cold. You are RICH, and if the front cylinder is OK then it's valves or exhaust problems most likely. Confirm that your exhaust isn't plugged up with carbon/crap/etc. AFter that, I'd still insist on a completely assembled brand new head. I'd also insist they disable the AIS in case it's malfunctioning.

Have the mechanics put a precision straight edge across the head where the intake mounts. bet it is the issue not the intake at all. Very unlikely 5 intakes are bad. You had the head rebuilt not replaced so that would seem to be the variable. You say it is more noticable in hot weather. The head could be distrorting when hotter. remember the rear gets the least air flow. I would really push for a new head. Could be a machining issue with that one only.
Also if the intake is leaking bad enough that you notice it it should not be running rich. They must have really amped up the fuel flow.
