bag racks 3 Years, 6 Months ago
Morning all. Well it is 07:58 hrs. in phoenix az. There are two things i would like to know, what rack fit's the hard bags of a r* , and is there enough volts to run 55 watt landing lights. This is on a 08 r* silverado S I have seen rack's in picture's but do not have a clue as to what they are off of. Also has anyone put on a master cylinder reservoir accessory switch, I just bought one from kuryahyn, but have not put it on yet. Thanks for any info.

I have the switch you're talking about. I like it and its very reliable, but also don't as the wires are completely visible at the neck. Could wrap this with something to hide the wires. Landing lights, you mean passing lamps? You'd be better if you go with 35w. As the 55w * 2 is about an extra 3.5AMP draw than the 35w. JMHO. The charging system on the R* is only about 27AMP. I can't run my silver bullets and passing lamps at the same time for long or my battery will be drained.

2006 Roadstar here and have been running 55w passing lamps/running lamps for 2-years now 41,000 miles. I always have them on and still have the same battery.

thanks slyguy and topnotch; The lights that i am thinking of putting on are lights that wll bolt to my engine cage close to the road to put more light write in front of the bike. I do have passing lights already on the bike. So you don't think i will be able to have all five lights on at the same time?

I've seen even cheap trucker type temperature gauges that display Volts. You can test the load that way or with any volt meter.

I was told by Yami mechanic, that with the lights a Silverstar comes factory with, your just about at the limit and I'd have to agree.

If you really want em, Put em on, put a separate switch on, use em gingerly. Just the location might be a good alternative to what you now have.

I just wouldn't burn em all for any extended length of time. It will tax your charging system and go to the battery. You could drag it down to a no start level, or just burn through battery's a lot more than normal.

You could negate the difference with the gas headlamp that uses about 25% of the amps as a Halogen bulb and that gives you plenty left for your aux lights. But then, they are so bright you wouldn't need any other lights.

probably for a minute or two. I ran both my passing lamps and silver bullets at the same time and ran it for about 15 minutes that way, pulled over in a gas station and the bike barely started, turn both off and rode another 20 minutes to work. Tried to leave later that day and the bike wouldn't turn over. Did hell on my electrical system. Bike didn't run right for 2 weeks and I was afraid to ride far because I didn't want to be stranded. Took it to my dealer for diagnostics and they found nothing significant. If you have to have these lights, I wouldn't recommend running them at the same time as your passing lamps (or at least not for longer than a minute or two).

My charging system is weaker than yours as I have an '04 (the year before they bumped up the charging system from 21AMP to 29). Its still not much. If you don't have and want to buy; IMHO you should pass.

that's a good question. I know some aftermarket bags you can get racks for. The yami bags, there isn't one that I know of. Perhaps if you see someone on the road or someone here or another site with what you're looking for you can ask them directly. I was considering hard back from tsukayu. They sell racks for their bags. Not sure if they would fit yami hard bags or not. http://www.tsukayu.com/LuggageRacks.htm

I bought a "CHROME SADDLEBAG COVER TRIM RAIL KIT" #53662-87T from Harley and put them on my Yami hard bags. The main reason I got them was to prevent my for from hitting the bag lid and scratching it up; works great for that. On a couple of occations I have tied something down with them.
I have an 03 R* and the alternator is not up to the task of 55 watt passing lamps, the latter bikes have a bit more power but I don't know just how much. On my own bike I have a high intensity head light made by PIAA which is 55/60 watts electrically (which is standard)with a light intensity of 125/135 watts. I have PIAA 35 watt bulbs in the passing lamps which have an intensity of 70 watts. The passing lamps are hooked to the headlight high beam and operated by a relay. I also have Harley "fog" lamps on the engine guard with the same 35 watt/70 watt light output hooked to the low beam and operated with a relay.
