MSF Experienced Rider Course - Lessons Learned 3 Years, 6 Months ago
Took the class Sat. I was amazed at how much I didn't know. To be honest, I wondered if I could even pass the final riding tests after all day's instruction.

Things I didn't know:

- You "press" your right handle bar to swereve right around an obstacle at high speed

- Before performing an emergency stop in a turn, get upright and straight (if time permits)

- If you've taken on too much speed in a turn, first try increasing your bank - before trying to slow down...by pressing the inside handlebar

- Older riders are much slower to react, regardless of their skill

In summary, I passed, but have a lot of practicing to do.

I also saved $150.00 a year on my insurance by taking the class. You may want to check with your insurance to see if you get a discount.

Wonderful course. I took mine in August. And yeah, practice practice practice, because someday, when you really need those skills, they will be automatic and may make the difference between an accident, an injury, or whether or not you walk away from it. Ride safe...

No discount for me on the insurance, but I am glad I took the class this past summer. Also I routinely do the skills practice from the Ride Like a Pro video. I am constantly amazed at how much better I ride now.

Yep. The Ride Like A Pro picks up where the course leaves off. If nothing else, I don't look like a dork when I'm riding at 5 mph through a parking lot.

Some of us have been riding for decades and take our experience for granted. I think that it would be a good idea to take the course just to prevent us from being more complaisent.

Amen to that bushrjackson...I attended a rider training course in January this year. Although I've held a riders license for over 33 years I hadn't done any serious riding for over 20 years while kids were growing up. I learnt heaps from the course...more than I thought I would.

Emu says...I recommend some form of refresher to anyone, no matter how experienced.

I loved the course...I just took the ERC last July...The great thing about being a retiree is that the Navy will provide the basic and experienced course for me at no cost annually....don't know if I will take it that often though.
