Opions? Oil versus Filters 7 Years, 4 Months ago

Have been reading all posts about engine oils. Dino oils versus synthetic oils and have concluded that synthetic is better. Now Im looking at oil filters and find out that most standard filters only filter down to around 90 microns, some no better then 300 microns. Scotts performance has a filter that goes down to 35 microns. Its really spendy at around 120 dollars. Cant get it out of my head that even if I go to synthetic oil I will still have these hunks of metal and trash going thru system. So in a either or scenerio which is better having the best oil with trash running thru engine, or having dino oil without the trash? Having to make the poor mans choice and wondering what everyone else thinks.

Synthetics are much better ... you got that one covered. Filters, there is a site somewhere that I cannot find right now where a guy cut open a lot of filters and you would be surprised how crappy some are made. I personally use the K&N filter, chromed. I get them from MAX AIR ENGINEERING - ( Click here for a good price.
This is one of those "easy to over analyze" items. If you go with one of the consistently mentioned synthetics (Mobil 1 Red Cap here mainly because I can get it ANYWHERE in my area) and a quality filter, you should be fine.

Post edited by: CRASH, at: 2005/01/13 18:52

Thanks Crash your advice to not over analyze some things is a point well taken. I have been guilty of that you know. Will just switch to the synthetic and if I cant sleep at night will buy the high dollar filter.

I believe this is the site that rash was talking about;
http://www.twocreeks.net/toby/oil_filters/index.shtml
You have to click on each of the oil filter names to the left, (once you get on the site), to see them cut open.
Hope this helps,
Odo
