Break in after tranny recall work 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago
I am having the tranny recall work done on my ride and I was surfing the web about break in methods. One lengthy article strongly reccomended getting on it right away, rather than the gentle break in that I have always been led to believe was proper. the article claimed that pushing the motor hard immediately helped the new rings to seed and would actually increase engine performance. Reactions? Comments? Reccomendations?

I've read in various sites, including our forum, we don't necessarily need to "baby" the motor as Yami recommends in the owner's manual. I didn't baby my scoot and it runs fine. I also changed the oil after the first 70 miles which took care of a good amount of the initial shavings from the break-in. I didn't try to push it hard though. I just rode it as I normally would.

I broke mine in hard as Musky referred to but that was for the motor benefit.I still get on it often as a motor the Roadie size needs to be run to keep the carbon build up at bay.If I were breaking in a tranny I would not baby it but I would not be popping the clutch and doing burnouts for the first couple of hundred miles.....Coug

I waited a full 17 miles before I took it to 100MPH. I'm glad I broke it in slow and easy....

I guess I am of the opinion that everything in there will either mess together or it doesnt. Ride it normally for a hundred miles and then let it go!

I recently purchased a 2003 RoadStar Silverado... are they affected by the recall as well?

joey,

The '03s were recalled too. Check with any dealer, and they'll look it up to see if it was done.

The break-in procedure is not as critical as it was years ago. Machining techniques and equipment is so much more precise today that the wear-in is usually quick and results in little "junk" to to get caught in the oil and carried to the filter.

The R* motor gets new piston rings upon recall. They need to be broken in. It would make sense not to run it at either low rpm lugging speeds, or maxed out at high rpms until proper seating has occurred.

That said, drive it pretty much as you usually would, avoid extremes for a few hundred miles... change the oil and filter, then enjoy the heck out of it.
