Bike Idling for 40-50 Minutes 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago
Yesterday I went to start my bike since I haven't ridden it for about a week or so. I started it up and ran back inside to get dressed to go for a little ride. Well I completely forgot about the bike idling in the garage and left it idling for 40-50 minutes, got caught up doing something.

I quickly ran outside and the bike was still running, which I guess is a good sign? I killed the bike right away and ran back inside and got dressed and went back to start the back. The bike cranked and cranked but wouldn't want to start. I got it started after about 30 seconds or so. I took it for a ride and everything seemed fine. But I am worried that I might have really messed something up.

The weather was a pretty chilly so I am hoping nothign happened.

Could the bike have overheated? Any damage?

I am pretty sure if it overheated it would have just died.

Have had mine die from overheating in stopped traffic in 120* on the way to Vegas. Let it cool and off we went. Changed oil after we got back and no problems.

I'm sure it's fine, probably just flooded out abit when you tried to restart.

It isn't good for it but if it's running OK you probably got away with it. These bikes shouldn't be idled for long. Get dressed before you start the bike. Even on cold days I don't idle mine for more than a minute or so before I ride.

I'd say it's irreparably damaged, send it to me and I'll dispose of it for you.

Probably didnt do the carbon build up any good, but I doubt you did any serious harm. Run some seafoam through it and ride away.

Gidday...SychoSly...I'd suggest working the engine a bit for a short perod after that episode, i.e. don't run for long periods at low idle but work the bike through the gears and at a variety of engine speeds and loads.

Idling of engines for prolonged periods can lead to bore glazing which can result in increased oil consumption and oxidation of the oil. Id be surprised if a single event will cause you much grief but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

I'd maybe be tempted to drop the engine oil early for next oil change...I'm not suggesting immediately..and just check for oil blackening and smell of burnt oil.

Just work the bike for awhile mate and don't lose any sleep...

Regards..Emu

With all that I've read here on the forum, these engines of ours are pretty tuff and can take a lot of abuse we dish out. With that said, I would change the oil soon and add some SeaFoam to the gas. Then relax. Check out the things Topnotch has done to his bike on purpose for our good here in some of the threads.
