I agree with RoadieFF It's irreparably damaged, However, I live closer to you so send it to me and I'll dispose of it for you at reduced transportation charges!

Be nice if you had synthetic oil in it. Kinda seems like you did, dino don't put up with heat that well. Regardless, I'd put sea foam in the gas and change out the oil ASAP. New Oil Filter also, as always.

I'd surely say it's 'broke in' though and no damage done.

Need to get ya some loud pipes so it doesn't happen again... Way I figure, if you were outside in Chi town, then you probably didn't overheat it...

Severe overheating will cause seizure. It was still running when you got back to it, therefore it did not severely overheat.

I was reading and waiting to learn of what oil you were using. If it was a syn oil, there probably was no harm done to the engine, but the oil may have sacrificed a lot of its additive package at the temp it was running.

We have ceramic cylinder liners, and they are incredibly durable. The damage would likely be done to the rings and maybe the pistons.

The best check of motor health at this point would be either a hot engine compression check, or a cylinder leak-down test.

Barring that effort, if it starts, runs and pulls just fine, and gas mileage is as it was... figure no harm done, and give thanks to God!!!

Thanks for the replies guys. I am running Mobile 20W-50 Fully Synthetic for the V-Twins and a K&N filter. The oil is pretty fresh in teh bike it has I would say about 500 - 600 miles on it. I am not going to be doing much riding any more this season as it is ridiculousy cold here in the good old chi now.

I'll try doing a compression test when the season begins next year and let you all know.

I think new pipes are on top of my priority list.

I'm only 4 hours away from you so I will gladly make the drive to take it off your hands

I'd go with the Sea Foam thing if I were you.

I know this is an older thread but thought you might like to know that the 08 model R* will shut off by itself after idling for 20 minutes and give you a malfunction signal on the meter. Turn the key off and back on to reset it. I guess they have this feature to protect the engine from overheating.

Good feature for when you're working on the bike and lose track of time.

I'd hate to think someone is idling their bike for that length of time.
