Okay... I've got every bit of the AIS removed, except for the danged elbows. How do I get these two things out? I've gotten the rear one to rotate a little, with a pair of vise grips and brute force, but it won't come OUT. I'm out of ideas.

Try a search. I can't say first hand because I don't have them but I think people have used a piece of wood and a hammer.

I used a can of compressed air. Take it and turn it upside down so the freon propellant exits first then spray the elbows. Using a vice grip pliers try and turn the elbow as you're spraying it. The cold will shrink the metal making it easier to remove (that's why they say put the new plugs in the freezer over night). Heating will only expand the metal. My front one came out fine. The rear one needed a little more "persuasion". Hope it works for you.

Bummer... I don't have any canned air. Would WD-40 help?

Anything that has freon as a propellant would probably do. Worth a try.

Frank,

It's by far the hardest part of the job.

Using a bar that fit fairly tight in the tube of the elbow (actually, a big philips screwdriver), I just kept working it back and forth while I had vise grips clamped on it and pulling. I thought they'd never come, but after much persuasion, they eventually did... and the end result is well worth all the effort!

I haven't been able to get the rear plug out, and haven't bothered trying the front one, yet. At the moment, I've got a towel wrapped around it full of ice cubes. It was the only thing I could think of, in lieu of some kind of refrigerant. I've totally mangled the part of it where the hose connects. If I could just cut them off flush and have the kit plugs still fit, I would gladly do so. Frustrating....

Don't lose hope. They will come out. How depends on who's advice you try. Or maybe you'll figure out a new solution. Good luck.

I always have an ample supply of penetrant in the garage. Kroil Penetrating oil, Liquid Wrench are a couple. I have this stuff we use at work we call wintergreen penetrant oil... smells like, yup, wintergreen.
Kroil is by far the best for seized metal parts. The longer it is on the further it penetrates.

Be patient! It may take some time and a trip to the store, no... not the beer store but, the autoparts store. Save the beer for after the job is done and you can admirer your work.
