I admit I test rode a 2009 street glide two weeks ago, I need a touring bike to go along with my toy. I was expecting it to blow me away and yell take me home, I was really disappointed. The fairing and radio was awesome but lack of power left me down. The salesman said Oh yeah you have to do this and that to make it really get up and go. That made my mind up going to find another R* and make an Ultra.

I bought my '01 midnight because I couldn't afford a custom, bike-in-a-box kit, or a Harley. When I was looking ('04) the market was way up, everybody was chasing that 280 or 300 tire. I bought my R* for $6,500. with 8000 miles; couldn't find a fatboy for less then $13,000. Is the fatboy $6,500. better then my R* absolutely not.
The R* motor is solid mounted, carburated, air cooled, and belt driven; and it's a softtail. The R* was the ONLY metric I considered, didn't even look at a shaft driven bike. The only thing I don't like is the t.p.s./ecm/ amount of wiring, and the seat/seathorns.
Remember though Harley is the center of the universe of the aftermarket world making parts hugely plentyful, tons of variety, and less expensive.

I love my R*.... I've riden some harley's and i dont know what to think! I really do like thier bikes, but when i bought my R* i save about ten grand for an equivelant to the road king, but i got bigger more powerful motor, more chrome, large whitewall tires, and more dependability!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!As for sticking to a brand i like yami's, this is my second one, my very first bike was a 650 vstar classic, and iloved the hell out of that bike, except for the shaft drive, but overall a very good starter bike.

Thanks!! The prevailing wisdom to beginners is for them not to buy their dream bike. The size, weight, and power gave me pause. Even after my MSF course, I still wondered if I'd bitten off more than I could chew, but now... Pfft... No way would I sell it or trade it, and I'm soooo glad I didn't get a Honda Shadow. Not that there's anything wrong with the Shadow, but I could see myself quickly growing dissatisfied with it. I really lucked into the Roadie. I didn't know anything about them. All I knew was when I saw it, it was love at first site. The lines and attitude of the whole bike just really lit me up!

Maybe... If I can ever get the danged AIS elbow joints out!
A few months ago, I stopped in at a Harley dealership in St. Louis. I wanted to browse around their accessories shop and also check out their bikes. I expected massive sticker shock, so no great surprise, there. The thing that surprised me, was that none of them really lit up for me. I don't know why, either. It's just something in the bikes' styling, maybe.
