Electra Glide Fairing on Road Star (updated) 3 Years, 5 Months ago
Just a quick one...

I have been thinking about putting a radio on RoadHo and I've seen a few of you brothers on this site with the ElectraGlide fairing. I've also found a site here:http://www.wideopencustom.com. I noticed they used a 'quick detach' type fairing and I've also read the article here at the clinic about putting on the fairing. Great Article!

Anyway, I love the flexibility of the Road *. It can look like a bagger, bobber or whatever you like (or to put it in a brand-identity ling a Heritage, King or Glide). My question is this: Would it be feasible to buy an outer and inner 'scratch and dent' Electra Glide fairing, put a stereo and speakers in it and be able to mount/unmount it in 5 or 10 minutes? Other than purchasing one at the link above, can a 'home-made' set-up be done to make it easy to remove? The wideopencustom site has a great product but seems pretty pricey...maybe its worth it?

I like my windshield, but on a long ride, it would be nice to put on a full fairing with some tunes on the highway but knowing I could remove it for short commutes. The other option, I guess, is just to put one of those motorcycle MP3 type stereos on the bike but I am concerned about sound level. Any advice from you veterans would be most appreciated.

I would imagine that if you are any good with fabrication you could me a bracket that would be quicky removable. I havent seen it done, but anything is possible. You will find aftermarket fairing for the roadstar run anywhere from 700 to 2500 bucks. The WOC is probably the most reasonable priced of the group. I love the look of the HD fairing, its just more work is all.

Having thought my through this, the headlight is mounted in the HD fairing, you use the stock headlight with the aftermarket fairings. that will present a huge problem for you on the quick disconnect.

I have a FLH fairing outer that I trimmed to do just that. I opted to go with a hard mount so I bought another outer. If you would like to try to fab make u a good deal can send pics. I think never tried it you could take a quick connect windshield and the harley bracket for the inner and weld them together after some cutting and tuck work. Then just make a connector for radio. To be honest I think if you price it you will find quickly aftermarket is about the same. I have oil pressure mechanical (I have the adapters 2) had to by 3 or 4 o2 sensor alpine radio 4 alpine speakers volt meter and tack. Plus sirius internal antenna plus paint.

cost of gauges about 300
cost of stereo 300 plus 250 in speakers plus 100 for sirius
fairing minus mind change 150
labor free
windshield 100 trim 25 radio trim 25 lighter 20 misc wires and metal 150
DRAGON WINGS 110
so as you can tell it adds up quick

I suggest the alpine if you want to listen to cds it will not skip like the other it better though to get a mp3 adapter

I LOVE MY FAIRING AND I LIKE THAT I DID IT WITH HELP FROM HERE

Well if you need any further info your in the right spot.

I've asked Makcap to give me a quote on his outer for sale. But I plan on doing a quick remove type fairing. If all goes well I'll fab some quick detatach bags too that have a built-in amp. Thanks for asking and I'll keep you posted.

I just got my Electra Glide outter from MakCap today and I should be receiving a new inner from Ebay in the next few days. Thanks Makcap! When I get things mocked-up, I'll post a pick. My schedule is to have the conversion done by April for the Leesburg Rally. I'm going completely quick detach and also going to fab-up some Electra Glide hard bags and tour pak. Once everything is installed, I'll remove them and take them to the painters. This is soooo much fun...!!!!

I finally got around to doing a 'mock-up' of the fairing. I used the technique here on the site but I'm modifying the attachment to the stock road star fairing mounting by using a Harley adjustable fairing mount for a Heritage. So far so good. My goal is on and off in just a few minutes for a quck detach. I'll keep posting my progress. Anyway, here are some pics so far:
