brake rotors 7 Years, 4 Months ago
I sent my brake rotors out to be polished and they came back chromed. A friend of mine said that since they are chromed now that I need a special kind of brake pad. Does anyone know what type they are?

I am not aware of any special pads. The biggest concern that I know of is the initial stopping power until the pads scored through the chrome. There are several chromers who might have some advice to you as well.

Maybe somebody with chrome rotors will chime in as well.

Thanks Steve,

I have not heard them mentioned before. Hopefully he checks into it a little further. The only thing I have ever read was to give it time to score the chrome aon the braking surface. There might be a prpoer set way to run them though.

Thanks guys... I did question it further with some other bike shops and one recommended the ceramic pads and another said that he wouldn't trust them and to send them back, have them stripped and polished. The reason being stopping could be compromised as the chrome gets hot. I'm going with the stripping and polishing to be on the safe side.

Are you positive they're chromed? All mine are polished and they look chromed. Lots of people have thought so too.

Quick way to tell... look on the inside edge of the interior circle holes on the front rotors (the ones that circle around the rotor and are about 1.5" in diameter). If the interior edges are super-shiney...the rotors were chromed. If they look like the gray of the stock rotor...they were polished. I don't know of any polisher that would bother to polish inside these holes.

Me, me, me ..... now you know one. LOL

I polished the insides of my rotors using a dremel. It actually went much faster than polishing the faces.

That's great Doc. Nice to hear of someone else who is pretty anal retentive about the ultra details of their bike! You have an awesome ride man!
