longest ride 3 Years, 4 Months ago
Well, its too darn cold to ride (17 degrees at 6 am this morning) so all I can do is think about good times last summer. In August, I rode from Indana to Massachusetts to visit my brother...it was a great ride and got to see a bit of new england. but thats another story. On the way home, I had planned to travel 8-10 hours and get a motel, but at that point in the trip, motels were toooo expensive, so I just kept riding. I ended up riding over 700 miles before hitting the proverbial wall and stopping for the night. At that point I didnt care how much the motel cost, but fortunately, motels were cheap in the middle of Ohio. The last 100 miles were painful...I took every excuse to stop and walk around abit to get off my butt.

So, what was your longest ride?

750 - 800 trying to make the iron butt 1500 - 2 day trip from Ohio to Star days in Colorado ... should have tried it when there wasn't a horrible heat wave - missed the Iron butt by 1 hour... but made it to longmount safely... end of the first day the wife nearly passed out on the back of the bike coming out of St. Louis... so the second day I took it easier... no patch is worth a life... ~Guido

My longest was Colorado Springs (Fort Carson) to my home in SE Massachusetts, some 2,200 miles I think. Did it twice in '73 (home and back on leave)and once in '74 (home before going to Germany).

I was young, and it was a '72 650 Yamaha. From post, I'd get to Kansas City on Day 1. Day 2 would take me to NE Ohio. And on Day 3, I'd hump it the rest of the way home.

Usually took about 12 hours each day, from like 9 to 9. The last day though, I'd just push on through, and would get home at 1 am.

Had to stop about every 110 times to be able to feel my fanny again... that thing had the very worst saddle!

I did 1200 miles in 20 hours, coming back home from Laconia last summer. On the way out, I did 1126 miles in 19 hours. That was figured by GPS, which was within 25 miles of what was shown on the odometer.

My longest ride was from L.A. to Maryland and back. Went up thru Michigan across the Rainbow bridge into Canada and back down thru Niagra Falls. This was on a new 76' Gold Wing. My way of finding a place to move to, which is how I found Boulder, Colo. 2 years later I moved here.
I've since ridden from Boulder to Baltimore in 3 days, one day was 850 miles, which I will never do again! This last summer was a 2350 mile ride but 10 days to do it. Lot's of rides in between.
I used to look at long rides as a challenge, let's see how fast I can do it. Now it's merely for the pleasure of riding. Although the mind still wants to challenge, the body says NO. Little Feat once wrote:
"And you know, that your over the hill,
when your mind makes a promise that your body can't fill"

Fireman,I think you get the prize...1,200 miles in one day is amazing...my ass (not to mention the rest of me) was done after 700 miles. You must have been cruzin fast on interstate highway. It took me almost that long (17 hours) to travel the 700. My hat is off to you sir!!

How do you prepare for something like that? Do you work up to it? I haven't had the Roadie on an interstate, yet. The big rigs scare the crap out of me, even when I'm in a car! I guess I'm going to need to conquer that first, if I'm going to make a longer ride like that. I'd like to do some runs from say... Tennessee to Missouri, and eventually ride out to California.

Blackhorse,

On that run, I was all interstate, It is surprising how you have to ride 80 or so to average 60-65. I really hadn't planned to ride back in one day, but once I got going I didn't know when to stop. The ride back was easier too. After 7 days in the saddle my butt was acclimated, and riding from a cooler climate to a warmer one helped. Before I try anything like that again, I'm getting an Ultimate seat. It's funny, I saved all my receipts and log to get my "Iron butt", but once I had done it (twice in 8 days) I never turned in anything.

Ride safe, Paul
