Is my carb supposed to look like this?? 3 Years, 4 Months ago
Checking the jetting and when I pulled of the air cleaner assembly, I noticed the black sliding thing in the center is over half way closed. What does this piece do, and is it supposed to be like that?

Mine has one to.
I think it is part of the Constant velocity setup.
I sure somebody will clarify this.

Thanks, I am sure it is nothing to be concerned about, just wondering what it is.

Hey just my 2 cents discounted to 1. It should slide up and snap back nice and smooth too. If it hangs at all it's easy to pull the top cover off and clean up.

It regulates the 'Air' part of the air fuel mixture. I think it is called the Throttle Valve and fits into the 'Air Funnel' Running the seafoam seems to keep it clean on mine. Only cleaned it once in 15K.

Much better mechanism than what I have on my auto's the pivot and when they get gunky they don't seal and it causes rough idle and poor MPG. Then I have to use throttle body cleaner and a tooth brush and rags to clean.

Just agreeing with everything that has been said so far. That is the slide, it controls the needle and keeps a constant velocity (or near) going through your carb throat. The position in your picture is as it should be when you are idling or the engine is turned off. There is a spring above it that constantly pushes it down, but will let it come up as your throttle opens up and the engine demands more air.

As it slides up, it also pulls the needle farther out of the needle jet (the main feeds this system) so that the narrower part of the needle is exposed and more fuel can get into the carb.

If you have the air cleaner off, and you rev it up pretty good, you will see it in action.
