Hey Doc, Musky or any of the other bazillion experienced people on this forum, does the '07 1700 have any "balancers" ?

My dealer told me that it had 2 counter rotating balancing devices and that accounted for the smoothness. I told him I had a service manual ( downloaded PDF) and it didn't show any balancers anywhere. He promply changed the subject and we never got back to it.

I have been through the manual again and can't find any sign or reference to balancers (ie Harley, Vulcan, etc twins).

It's not that I really care at this time, but always like to know what I have.

Thanks for any ifo you can impart.

John

If you look in the service manual on Page 5-114 you'll see what he is talking about. There are two 'balancers' which rotate counter to the pistons.

Yamaha engineered the engine so that would not be smooth.

Everything I read said Yami stayed with the single pin crankshaft to retain some "feel" in the bike. If you try a VTX or the big Kaws they have the double pin which results in a much smoother ride. I'm with Doc, the feel is one of the reasons I bought the R*. I was very interested in the VTX until I rode it, no sensation of riding a big bike. Without the counter balancers the engine would have to be rubber mounted or your kidneys would rattle loose. To me Yami hit it just right. Enough feel but smooth enough so us old guys bones don't rattle apart. Kinda like the mono shock. Give us the looks of a hard tail but with suspension. I shudder now everytime I look at a true hard tail. Probably the reason for at least one of my back surgeries. But they were cool...

It's a bit better now-a-days. You just stick on one of those monster 240 tires and run it under-inflated. It's just a little worse than running with a stiff spring and the shock set to max firm. Just don't hit a big pothole.

But you're right ... I like my 'softtail' too.

Doc,

I had seen the crankshaft counterweights and knew they had to be sizable. It takes a large amount of rotating mass to carry a single pin crank around to the next cycle, ie the old 2 cyclinder john deeres, etc.

What I was asking about is the "add on" dampers or counter balancers that run off the end of the crank similar to what is behind the stator on the vtwin vulcans and now on the 88 cu in harleys. Yamaha has used gear driven balancers for years on various engines and I think this is what confused my dealer.

Like yourself and most others, the lack of these dampers and the inherrant low speed vibration was one of the reasons I went to the Road Star.
