Taking off the AIS is technically illegal in Texas for example. The law says all motorcycles after 1968 have to have some kind of emissions hardware and that the owner can't remove it or disable it. Most inspectors probably don't know what should be hanging off the front of your engine. Unless the bike is tested for emissions by sticking a hose into the exhaust to sample it won't stop you from getting a sticker. I threw mine into the attic in a labeled box in case I ever need it.....Ya never know.

I agree,
My AIS unit stored away too, just in case the environMENTALists come chasing me!
I'll bet Yamaha would charge over 500 bucks for a new AIS if some EnviroCop ever said I had to put it back on.
New stock muffler slip-ons, (to replace the originals that were scratched on delivery of new Roadie from dealer) were over $1050.00 dealer cost!
Oh well, that little scratch in the original muffler worked out good for me! I gutted the scratched ones and left them on the bike. I still have the new perfect ones in the box for when the NoiseCops come looking...

My AIS is in a plastic Super America bag shoved behind the books on my bookshelf. I didn't label it.

Ditto. Mines in the box marked "keep this crap in case some stupid law is passed that forces you to ugly up an otherwise beautiful motor". So I still have it!

Re:Keeping AIS stock 5 Years, 2 Months ago
I have an '02 Roadstar I bought in '05 brand new. I also bought the extended warranty, so I am good until 2010. My dealer said that he didn't have a problem with my removing the AIS but if I'm on the road and break down other dealers might not honor the warranty if it is removed. Soooo..... I just disconected the vacuum line and plugged the port, then I put marbles of the appropriate size in the rubber part of the feed tubes and no more backfire.

Lots of info about removing, but has anyone found a better connector and line to leave system operational?
