a new and interesting problem 5 Years, 3 Months ago
after a lot of very cold days and rideing in them i had a chance for some warm weather riding it went to 86 here in calif.
now the problem as the bike ran great on thease cold days it now runs like crap on the warm ones to the point it was even not wanting to start after a 50 mile ride it even vibrated more than it ever did but when i went to restart it was having a real problem the fuel pump was going nuts and you really had to crack the throttle open to get it to start and the smell opf gas was terrible if it was a car i would have sworn it was vapor locking or the float was stuck i.ve looked for a fuel filter and havn't seen it yet any chance the pump could be the problem or the carbs have a problem with the float and it did it several times to the point that i just brought it home and parked thought for a minute i was riding a harley

JB,

I am no expert but getting into the 50s here created a difference with mine so I adjusted the PMS and it was fine .....hope you are as lucky but that is what I would try first if it changed when the temps did then go from there if that does not help......Good Luck man........Coug

or the float was stuck

Could be. The float needle might be sticking. Try running a hose from the petcock right to the carb (bypass the pump) and see what happens.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2007/02/05 19:19

Hey JB
The PMS screw is under a brass cap on the bottom of your carb ....there are 2 brass caps under there...you want to drill out the one farthest from the bowl it is in the "volcanoe looking"out set rise, you might be able to put a sheet metal screw to it and pull it free or you may have to drill for it.....be easy so you dont drill into the pms screw underneath .
Musky may be right it may be your float but you need to know where your pms is to fine tune the stock carb for weather ......temp and humidty..Good Luck......Coug

Post edited by: Cougar, at: 2007/02/06 05:46

Actually it sounds like a fairly common R* issue where the either the floats are sticking, or the gas in the bowl is percolating when the engine gets warm. I saw it this weekend with 2 Road Stars, mine one of them that after about a 70 mile highway run and a short stop to gather up the group we went to restart and both of our bikes puked fuel out the over flow on the bowl and flooded. The only way to start it was to turn off the gas open the throttle and crank it over. As soon as it catches you then open the petcock. Mine has done this intermitently since I bought it. AS for running rough, if you made changes to the settings ie. PMS while it was cool you may need to reset for warmer operation. I have opened my PMS almost a full turn since it cooled down and still get an occaissional pop. Last weekend on a nice run it was getting more than intermitent. I have check all of the seals and exhaust to see if anything was leaking or loose. Hope it has gone away. To wet to ride the last few days. Hope tomorrow.
