Re:Electra Glide Fairing on Road Star (updated) 3 Years, 3 Months ago
I finally got my fairing done (not painted yet) and took it for a quick test ride today. I LOVE IT!!! Sound as a rock with no movement or undulation. Wind, even with the shorty 4 inch windsheild is almost non existant. I had to reinforce the home-made 'hardware store' mounting brackets with aluminum up the inside of the inner and it worked like a charm. Anyway, fairing is done with quick disconnect wiring and four bolts to remove the fairing. Total cost in fairing with jenson marine radio, four speakers, LEDs, wiring, bracketry and windshield is around $350.

I'm almost finished with the quick remove set-up of the hardbags. Just a few tweeks to get them perfect...Total investment in the bags so far is around $200. I figure I'll have about another $50 in them with for some fiberglass from filling of old HD mounting holes.

I'll post some pics of the bike with fairing and bags when the bags are 'final.'

So, I'm now at the point of figuring out how to mount this tourpak. Any suggestions or best methods on mounting? I've been looking at Wompus racks but at a price of $220 they sound expensive just for a piece of metal especially considering I only paid $80 for the tour pak. I don't have a welder, but for that money I could buy/rent one and make my own. Any other cheaper options? Is the wompus rack worth the cost? Any other vendors of mouting hardware for the *?

Thanks guys!
Adrian

Wompus rack works great. Thats what I used. If your bags are HD bags and open by sliding, get a Wompus special made 2.75" lower than his normal rack. It will make your pack look better.

How did the speaker bar work for you? I used cobra rack minus the sissy bar. I think it sits as low as javewaves. Here is a link to a base for 20.00 they also have racks and mounting brackets.next step If you order call and mention roadstar club yes club not clinic you will get 10 % discount. As always let me know if you need anything.

Makcap, I just decided to drill them from behind and run the screws from the front. I am happy with the result - looks good, sounds good and no vibration or movement, so I'm happy.

Side pic with base purple on fairing. Final paint of blue metallic clear should get a good match with the tins. I have the rear bags mounted as I want them, now just paint prep on the bags...

Hey Adrian
Good work! Are you using that rack to mount trunk? That's what I mounted the one in my sigpic with. Three bolts, and it's on/off. Also, mine has carried a ton of weight. Well, maybe not a ton.
Can't wait to see yours after everything painted!

Thanks! I first thought that my luggage rack might not work and hold-up to the weight, but the more I look at it, the more I think I will give it a try. I've actually sat my 200lb behind on it and it took the weight well, so instead of the expense of a new rack that attaches to the rear sissy-bar, I might give it a go. Coach, if you used the old 'three bolt' rack like mine, then surely it WILL work...thats great feedback.
