Key Blanks for R* 3 Years, 2 Months ago
Got the shock of my life earlier this week when I called the dealer to see what it would cost to purchase a key blank so I could make an extra key to carry around. I tried to get an extra key made at the local hardware store on Saturday and found out the key lacked the proper shoulder to work properly...the key wouldn't insert all the way. The hardware store refunded my money, but that still left me without an extra key. So I contacted the dealer and was told the blank for the 07 R* would run me $50!!! Needless to say I said "thanks, but no thanks". There were other words I wanted to share, but decided to be polite. I then checked with a local locksmith and discovered he had a key that was made specifically for Yamaha bikes that would work with the R*. He asked if $3.50 was okay....I said you bet, give me two! Anyone else run into this problem before.....dealer trying to squeeze $50 out of you for a silly key? I could understand it if the key included a computer chip, but this is a straightforward key, nothing fancy or technically complicated.

Sounds like BS to me and another good reason not to go to the dealer. Ford quoted me $75 for an extra key for my wife's F-150, but that thing does have the chip in it.

I wouldn't go to the dearler for that for anything. I got two keys made for $4.25 and they work great any locksmith will have blanks for them. I don't go to a dealer unless I can't find something any other place. I buy my stuff off e-bay or from other bikers.

Mine came with a spare key as well, but it's tough to slip it into my wallet due to the fat part you grab on to. I also got a regular key made and now keep it in my wallet for that time when I know I'm gonna loose the original and be 200 miles from home.

Some folks also keep a spare taped to the inside of the headlight housing. That way all you need is a screwdriver and a little time to get to a spare key.

I've found every time I thought I'd lost my key, I cursed a blue streak, then found it in the ignition. I'm only 23, memory shouldn't be going like that already

Had recently wondered about this very subject seeing I only have one key, the spare I used to carry in wallet before I lost other one. Hadn't really looked into making a copy but will now that I have key blank number for reference. You Guys are awesome, MINDREADERS!!
