I got another dumb one! What are these guys using on their carbs when there is no air cleaner, just that open ended bell. What is that?

It's an open ended bell. It lets dirt, sticks, rocks, small birds, and other non gas / air stuff in to your carb. Unless you have turned your stock motor into a monster and are doin quarter miles with it I wouldn't use it. But I'm sure someone will hop in and disagree.

They are velocity stacks and they do look really good on a slick custom. I had a friend who thought that they looked cool on his old 450 Honda back in the day and they did. The engine started smoking and buring oil about 4,000 miles later. They help to maximize the motion of the air to increase the intake, much like the wing of an airplane creates lift, but they do not filter impurities or other foreign matter from the air. This is then blown in with the fuel air to the cylinder where it does all sorts of damage. If you want maximum performance from a naturally aspirated engine, and do not mind rebuilding frequently use velocity stacks. If you want maximum performance and long life use a BAK.

The MaxAir system might be the closest thing to a stack with a filter.

Velocity stacks on a daily rider is asking for an extremely shortened top-end life (valve train) , as what go's in is completely unfiltered. Look cool, just not bike friendly.

I believe there is a very fine screen in the velocity stack...but still not enough filtration for dust and dirt. They are more for show, and not go.
