I know we all talked about it before, but before I do this change,I just want to make sure!!!! Is the amsoil severe gear synthetic 75w-90 oil backwards compatible for the gl-4 application?????

The 75W90 SVGis GL-5 and is compatable for GL-4. I use it in my own 03R* and a couple of customers R*s. And in harley transmissions.

Clifford
Ok so I canput it in the transfer case and not have to worry about it then????

For some f'ed up reason I cant find the royal purple,or the amsoil you are talking about!!! But I did find the mobil- 1 synthetic, maybe I will just use that one instead!!!!

I'm using the Mobil 1 synthetic 75-90w with good results. If you go to www.mobiloil.com and read the info on this gear oil it states that it is fine to use in applications that require GL-4.

As long as you know it is GL-4 backwards compatible, you're good to go!

I'm also a Mobil 1 gear oil user, and it works fine in our Star's tranfer case. 13.44 oz is the right amount.

Recommended for use in differentials, manual transmissions and other gear applications requiring any of the following specifications: API GL-5, MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, Dana SHAES 234 (Formerly Eaton PS-037), Mack GO-J, or the differential (hypoid) gear oil specifications from all domestic and foreign manufacturers such as GM, Ford and Daimler Chrysler. Can also be used in axles where an API GL-4 lubricant is recommended.

This is taken from the amsoil website and found here.

Maybe a stupid question, but is there an article on how to change the gear oil? I checked the tech articles and did not see anything. Probably a simple task but not sure what I am looking for

I don't think is makes a bit of difference....it's only gear lube.BTW...don't try to cross the US border w/ the knuckles

It has been claimed that GL5 rated lubes are corrosive to yellow metals. Not sure if any of the affected metals are in the R* transfer case, but Yamaha calls for GL4. I would not take a chance on running GL5 in the R* transfer case, there is simply no reason to. With that said, there are many GL5 rated gear lubes that are backwards compatible to GL4. When this is the case, it will usually state somewhere on the bottle that it is also compatible with applications requiring GL4. I would not use a GL5 rated lube if it does not specifically state that it is also compatible with GL4 applications. JMO.

yamaha is suggesting using syn 50 weight engine oil in the transfer case

that is more than ok...besides what is the concern over gear oil in the transfer case ..there are no gears there anyway..just a chain and two sprockets..
