yamaha is suggesting using syn 50 weight engine oil in the transfer case

that is more than ok...besides what is the concern over gear oil in the transfer case ..there are no gears there anyway..just a chain and two sprockets..

Actually, (unless I'm wrong and I've been wrong before) there aren't sprockets. There are two hypoid gears and a chain. Also, Yamaha says to use 80W hypoid gear oil that is GL-4 compliant.

is that what you call them ??

The Yamaha parts book calls them "4WM-17682-00-00 Sprocket,Chain Drive and 4WM-16139-00-00 Chain ,Primary...

and they dont look anything like a hypoid gear...used in differentials..

Hypoid Gear

and I am well aware of what is in the manual...but I am referring to what the Yamaha reps have been telling dealers
since the introduction of syn oil 50 to Yamahas line..

akin to syn 3 oil that Harley has and it is used in the tranny... the primary... and the engine...since viscosity shear properties etc are as good if not better than gear oil..

there is a gear on the end of each shaft that each chain sprocket is on....these shafts project into the cavity that contains the transmission gears..where they are bathed in engine oil ...

yes sprockets are sometimes called sprocket gears

I'm using the Mobil 1 synthetic 75-90w with good results. If you go to www.mobiloil.com and read the info on this gear oil it states that it is fine to use in applications that require GL-4.

Me, too. Mobil 1 has been a good choice for me.

Looks like gears in the parts manual. And the chain is fashioned like a timing chain. Definitely gears in there. Maybe that's why the owners manual says to run gear oil in there. You would think Yamaha would mail out bulletins when they decide to change something.

A gear is a "device that transmits rotational force to another gear or device" (Wikipedia). In our case there is a gear on the end of the shaft which connects to another gear by means of a chain.

Gear oil is oil specially formulated for differentials, transmissions, transfer case etc. There are various grades which range from 'engine' oil to oil specially formulated for severe or high pressure situations ..... normally thicker than engine oil and contain additives such as sulfur. However, a 75W90 gear oil is equivalent in viscosity to a 10W40 engine oil.

The gears in the R* transfer case do not resemble the gears in an auto transmission, they more resemble the gears in the engine .... think timing chain. Do you you use gear oil in your timing chain compartment.

So looking at it from that perspective ... why not use a 10W40 engine oil in the tranny?
