I ran a Google search for tire procedures, many many sites with information on tires. You can read all day on it if you choose too.

I hate to say it, but, what a goofball that guy who called you is. He's probably the intern 'gofor' that does some of the basic stuff around the shop and the mechanic told him to call you about the tire replacement but didn't bother to explain to the kid why. When you go in to pick up your * and ask about the call, I bet that's what you find.

I don't have my local stealership do much work for me anymore, but, when I did have anything done, that's what I saw. The main man and one or two 18-19 year olds learning as they go.

If I were a shop mechanic, I wouldn't want a customer to ride a tire that is probably showing dry rot cracks either. Problem is, he should have been the one to call you, so he could explain his reasons. The 'gofor' kid didn't know why he was calling, so, he couldn't respond, probably got scared, panicked and hung up.

I guess I'm saying; 'go easy on the kid and blame the man'. He should make his own calls.

Ratl.

Let's hope your bike doesn't catch fire.

It happened there a year or so ago...

I watched her burn that day... the whole outside lot and an insurance building burnt to the ground. Some how the stealership wasn't even touched. Maybe thats why they wanted to sell me tires

I honestly forgot about that day

the stealership is the white building under the yellow sign. the lucky employee was tuning a wheeler when it burst into flames. two of them shoved it out the door to save the shop and it rolled right into a stack of crates, full of new bikes and wheelers.

Ok so i purchased my 1999 roadie late september of '08. The original owner didn't even put 5,000 miles on it. I road her a few times before the season ended, got 5,800 on her now.

So i find out the recall wasn't done yet and bring her in last week. Just the other night i get a call from the shop... " yeah so i was helping them put your motor back in and i noticed you need a rear tire pretty bad. I can get you out the door for $190...." I laughed and said the bike barely has 5k on it and he said ... " umm uh umm (click)"........ The fking little sht head hung up on me. I'll be picking up my roadie this afternoon and I'll let you guys know what they do or try to do.

By what you say and what tire manufactures recommend, you do need new tires as motorcycle tires should never be run more than 3 years. You can read about it here. http://www.bikerenews.com/Stories/Motorcycle_tires.htm Or call any tire customer service center. In the posted link you can tell how old the tire is, if the bike is a 99 it's most likely over 11 years old, way beyond safe useful lifetime.

So I tend to agree with dealer that it's time $190 is not a deal but seems to be going price. I'll pay $150 for a new tire mounted and balanced if I take it off and install it. If I pay myself what i make at work per hour doing the removal ind install, $190 becomes a deal, but they won't polish and clean and wax all I will so. I'll do it.

I have 16K on my 07, So Age of a tire is never a concern to me. I have run some old tires around, very mindful of what I have under me. No tricky riding for sure.

Caller should have explained all this to you instead of hanging up, and you might have called him right back.

Yes all true. But the point was missed. He noticed the rear tire, not the front... told me it was getting "down there". That told me he had now idea about the age of the tire. If he did why wouldn't he have looked at the front, hmmm... Besides road dust on the tread the tires look brandnew, so there's not a chance that they are "getting down there". This is the lead tech and not one of the young kids that called me either. I will be getting new tires... But not from them.

Oh and last night they now told me thursday or friday it would be done. A full week longer than they told me it would take.
