Why do the English drink warm beer??--that nasty warm sticky stuff--because they have Lucas refridgerators!!! HAHAHA just a joke--I guess I should post this on the new joke thread--just used to the Triumph and MG cars ignition systems. VROOM VROOM PS--I just changed my transfer case oil to a GL4 compatible--Royal Blue--took out the GL5 I put in about 2 weeks ago due to the recommendations here--thanks guys. VROOM VROOM ride hard but safe!!!

good thing too... can you imagine the damage 13.44 oz of the wrong gear oil could do...

More than the GL4 would do if it does not have the correct additives or too much additives. If Yami says yamalube 20W-50 is good to use in there, dump it in. However, I seem to remember many on the clinic consider Yamalube being the crappiest oil on the planet, but for some reason, all of a sudden, it is being considered for use in the transfer case. Get-ER-Done.

Mobil 1 V-twin 20w-50 is recommended for use in my HD engine ...primary chain case and wet clutch.. and six speed transmission..three separate cavities..

It is also highly recommended for use in the R* transmission... engine and wet clutch...a single common use cavity...

do you think it is safe to use in the transfer case of the R*...??

If it meets GL4 specs. Yamaha says GL4, I will not run anything else in there. If I tried to have warranty work done in the transfer case and they found Mobil 1 20W-50 in there, would they honor the warranty? Only if it met the specs for that application. Besides that, why even bring up Mobil, Yami supposedly is saying that it is Yamalube that can be used in there, not Mobil 1. I am still wondering why it is even a consideration. The lube change interval if you have 85W-90 GL4 in there is 16000 miles. Is it really necessary to consider using engine oil in there? And as it was pointed out before, what would the change interval be if engine oil was in there? Would it last as long? Where is the documentation from Yamaha approving this? I am not going by what some half witted dealer tech told someone. That's another one to chock up. Yamalube has been bashed as an inferior lube, but yet we are considering putting it in our bike now. Dealer techs have also been said to be inferior, but yet we are now listening to them. You all dump whatever you want in there and chances are, you will be fine, no problems but over time you could see some problems. The point I am making is why? What advantage do you get? Where is the documentation from Yamaha? So far, all I have seen is claims, no proof. I have covered all this ground before, and in the interest of keeping the peace, and the fact that I grow weary, I will bow out of this discussion now, but if anyone comes up with a service letter or bulletin from Yami, post it up on here. For the record Pop Rivet, I am not saying you are wrong, I am just saying for me, I need more than just a dealer techs word on it. You do have one good point. The HD primary is comparable to the R* transfer case. Only difference is our clutch pack is not in the transfer case, but it does have a chain like an HD primary. Peace.

Just to clarify folks ..... Yamaha specifies SAE80API “GL-4” Hypoid gear oil in their Service Manual.

I've seen mentioned that Yamaha "is saying that you can use Yamalube". I equate Yamalube with Yamaha's engine oil.

I am not aware of one but does anyone have a Service Bulletin where Yamaha specifies that you can use engine oil in the transaxle case?

NO...

and that brings up the question...

Same service manual..specifies use of SAE 20w40 motor oil Type SE ...

Does any body have a Service Bulletin saying where Yamaha specifies you can use 20w 50 synthetic oil in the engine

??

Not that I am aware of, but as you pointed out to me with a link to the yami site in one of your previous posts, the Yamaha star site has it listed for use in cruisers for engine oil. But the owners manual says 20-40W for the engine which Yamaha does not make anymore. That is what I meant when I previously said that Yamaha does not have all their ducks in a row. If they want to change something, they need to revise the manuals to reflect that change, and they haven't so far. Likewise, if they have approved 20W-50 engine oil for use in the transfer case, they need to put it in writing. Until then, I will stick with hypoid gear oil that is listed in the manual. Especially since mine is under warranty. My owners manual is reletively new too, I bought my bike last November. I know I said I was out of this discussion, but I can't help myself. I'm sick, I need help.

How would they know what oil is in there? Just curious is all.

I think much ado is made about nothing with these oil threads. There's much bigger things in life to worry about, but that's just me.

Carry on!

By analyzing the oil, which is not out of the question if they are doing warranty work in there. I guarantee that they will send the oil to the lab if they are doing warranty work for corroded parts. The point is, why take the risk for no advantage? What advantage would one have in running engine oil in the transfer case? The gear oil Yami calls for is changed every 16000 miles. It is not like it is something you really need to worry about a whole lot, ya know. Why take the risk of the unknown when the known is not a problem?
