Does anybody know how similar/dissimilar the Roadstar and newer Liner engines are? Is it the same bottom end with just a bored/stroked top-end? Are the cylinders/heads any taller? Just curious as to whether it would be an easy bolt-in into a Roadie frame or if the mounts and/or overall height would prevent it.

Starting to see some Liner engines for sale from wrecked bikes, and for the price it would be a lot cheaper than what you'd wrap up in building up the stock motor with a big-bore kit, carb, cams, head porting, etc. The Liner engine would also likely be a more reliable/durable and you'd get fuel injection to boot.

I'd love to build a chopper with one of those!

I am assuming they would be pretty close.

Roadstar= 102-cubic-inch (1670cc) air-cooled 48° V-twin; pushrod OHV, 4 valves/cylinder
Liner= 113-cubic-inch (1854cc) air-cooled 48° V-twin; pushrod OHV, 4 valves/cylinder

I'm no expert, but I'm assuming the only difference would be the bore.
Why would they have completely different tooling for a motor with the same specs just to add 11 c.i.'s

P/N for the crankcase's are different from the R* to the 'Liner , and just from the eyeball test , I'd say that's not all. My guess is that by the time you got a 'Liner motor to work in a project , you could have built a stout R* motor with half the headache....... BB

Well, if you look at the requirements for any big-bore kit over 110ci for our bikes, it specifies the cases have to be bored. That might explain why the Yamaha P/N's are different. Also, the current 1700 has a 97mm x 113mm bore and stroke, whereas the 1900 is 100mm x 118mm. That longer stroke probably requires some additional clearancing for the rod angle at the case/jug junction much like you'd have to clearance the block on many V8 stroker motors.

Like PhantomXT said, why would they design a totally new engine for just 11 cubic inches?

i have the same dream,liner performance /classic roadstar looks. my buddy owns a liner & i've learned, the only way this'll happen is if i win the lottery. the engine is phyically larger, different mounting points, air filter is under the tank(?), no noe makes duals for them,(my biggest bitch) etc, etc. BUT , IF I WIN THE LOTTERY

I would say check patrick racing out and you could go as large as a 123 I believe. I would imagine price wise you would be about the same. All I know you wouldn't find too many around.
