Muffler/baffle question 3 Years, 1 Month ago
Hey guys - I was wondering what the adverse AND advantageous effects of removing the fiberglass packing around the baffles would be (Roadhouse Dooleys, BTW). I'd like a little more volume coming out, but obviously wouldn't like to lose any back-pressure. Also, would removing the packing cause heat to discolor/blue the muffler? In a nutshell, what exactly does the packing do - shield the heat, muffle the sound, provide more back-pressure, or all of the above?

Thanks!
:-DD.

I dont know about shielding the heat, but it definitly muffles sound and provides a little more backpressure as I am led to believe.

Hmmm... I'm just wondering how I might get a little more sound outta the pipes, yet not lose any back-pressure.

DD...I'm glad you posted this as I have been recently wondering the same thing. I have the Roadhouse 2-1 and was thinking about removing the packing to see how it affects the sound. I initially wrapped my baffle in sheet metal, then packed it. Not sure if it really affected the volume or not. If so, very little change. I was wanting to try to completely remove the sheet metal and packing, but was concerned about discoloring the muffler can.

As Scotto said about removing the baffle completely, I tried it awhile back just to see. Man, don't do it....take my word for it. So loud I thought the bike was gonna fall apart.

Anyone have any thoughts on discoloring the cans if you remove the packing?

Thanks....greeny

Well, I took all the packing (& what seems like steel wool wrapping underneath the fiberglass) OFF OF THE BAFFLE. Now it's just plain 'ol baffles with no packing.

WOW! EXACTLY what I was looking for! It's more hot-rod-ish sounding, a little louder, and I don't feel any drop in performance. In fact, although it may just be my optimism, it seems to be running better. Maybe more air flow? I dunno... I'm not familiar with carburation/fuel-to-air mix stuff. All I know is that the sound is WAY better quality, and it seems to be running a little better. I'd recommend removing the packing, guys!

I'll see if I can get a couple pics up this evening.

OK here are a few pics of the Dooleys' baffle... notice the steel wool-looking stuff as well as the fiberglass.

TAKE THE PACKING OUT! You'll be happy you did!

How many miles do you have on those pipes? The packing looks in pretty good shape. I like your tips, I thought of getting the caddilac ones.

Thanks for the pics to go along with your solution. Glad your happy with the result.

The baffles are so far back that you really shouldn't see any discoloration. My DK baffles are in a can without any packing material.

Saturday I just installed a mod to my baffles. The 2 1/2" DK Hard Chromes were too loud and I wanted to tame them some.

I cut two circles of stainless steel sheet metal, drilled about a dozen 3/8" holes in them, tapped them into the end of my baffles and am happy so far with the sound.

I also changed the setting on my Dyna 3000 to 36A while I was at it. The test drive was scary fast.

I will take a drive to work tomorrow and let you know how it sounds and runs.

BTW - Man there are a lot of bikes on the road!!!
