Open belt primary 3 Years ago

Ok guys I really like the look of the open belt primary. I'm running my drive belt w/o the lower guard and pulley cover off. I want to try and go from a chain primary to a belt primary but I can't find anything anywhere about a yamaha setup. All I find are HD setups form about 600 dollars on up. Anyone know if a conversion is even made for a roadstar or if there is an HD model that would possibly be able to convert to fit the roadstar. If so what am I looking at fab. wise. Really like the look but cant find squat. Any help is appreciated.

The Road Star doesn't have the same type of set up as a Harley. Our bikes have a transfer case after the transmission in the stream of power transfer. In other words, there is no "primary" like on a Harley.
I suppose you could expose the transfer case on the right side with a belt instead of the chain.
Good luck!

No can do.
I suppose you can expose the transfer case chain but you would need to change the chain ... there is not belt for the right side transfer case setup that I am aware of.
You can also do a right side pulley setup and eliminate the pulleys on the left.

Open chain sounds somewhat cool; however what kind of chain would I be looking at and since the gears and chain are in a wet environment, what downfalls to this setup would or could exist. As far as a right side setup you are refering to the drive belt and sprockets correct. I'm just trying to exauhst all possibilties before jumping in headfirst like I usually do. I know the possible hazards associated with removing guards and whatnot but it aint like im riding around in shoes or flipflops with baggy pants
Thanks for the input guys.

There's the rub .... the OEM chain needs to be lubricated to minimize wear and tear. You would need to find a drive chain that would be the right length and fit the sprockets.
There's a member who has done the right side pulley setup ... you need to look to him for advice 'right from the horse's mouth'.
Try doing a search .. I think he posted some details within the last 6 months.

On a Harley the transmission is not part of the engine, it is a totally separate unit. The primary drive connects the engine to the transmission; it is normally a closed housing with a chain and a wet clutch. The open primary uses a belt instead of a chain and uses a dry clutch instead of the wet clutch, and of course the housing isn't covered. There is no primary on the RoadStar.

I understand that this a onepart setup, engine and tranny together. Guess I should have clarified a little better at the start. If the tansfer case has a two gear and chain setup then my thinking is that the gears should be a 1:1 ratio which whould mean quite possibly that I could go with new pulleys designed to run a belt on. Am I thinking correctly or am I off. My minds in full gear right now and I aint gonna be home for another 24 days to a darn thing about it. Oh well gotta make a living. thanks for all the input so far, keep it coming.

So you want to go to right side drive. Put a belt pulley on the output shaft of the motor and run a belt? Get rid of the transfer case altogether.

Muskey that is definatley an option. But could I keep the transfer case and just go with a belt setup. Not against the rightside drive at all I think they're pretty cool, but thats been done. I haven't seen anyone run an open transfer case with a belt. Just something I wanna try. Maybe it will work maybe not. Just fishing the idea right now.
