Well, cool ruffnek. That's going to be a short belt. Have you sourced that yet?

Well I haven't really found anything belt wise but then again I aint looked that hard on that end of the deal yet. I have been in talks with a guy in Arizona about they pulleys. He has a setup were he grinds worn pulley teeth down and then does a poly tooth overlay. Essentialy it seems to be a resurface job. That meens I would be able to retain the stock pulleys in the transfer case. They would just be reworked so to speak to accept a belt instead of a chain. We're still trading info. with each other right now so I'm still unsure at the moment, but the situation is promising. I guess once I figure out if that will work then I'll have an idea about what size belt I'm gonna have to go looking for.

The cogged belts are an inch or more wide and the pulleys have to be the appropriate width to fit. The sprocket for the chain is probably 1/4 inch or so wide. For your Arizona man to redo the cogs on an existing pulley is one thing; but I don't see that he can make a pulley out of a sprocket.

Yeah that will deffinately be an issue, but I won't be able to know for sure what size they are untill I get home and can actually put my hands on them and get a measurement. Just by judging from parts schematics I've found, those gears look wider than 1/4". They look like they may be around 1" but could very well be smaller. I'll just have to wait untill I get home to see. Might very well wind up being a custom pulley type setup. Hope not but might very well be the case.

There was a bike a couple years back that the guy extended the front drive pulley and then took the cover thats infront of the clutch and mounted in all reallity a idler (dummy) pulley so it looked just like an open primary but only turned when the bike was in motion. it looked awesome. There is also a guy on dephi forums that has done the trans to jack shaft open drive and just got the bike running.its cutting edge metrics on roadstar riders forum

The Road Star doesn't have the same type of set up as a Harley. Our bikes have a transfer case after the transmission in the stream of power transfer. In other words, there is no "primary" like on a Harley.
I suppose you could expose the transfer case on the right side with a belt instead of the chain.
Good luck!
It is true it is not like an HD, but the Roadie does indeed have a primary drive. All bikes have a primary drive. Primary drive just means the primary ( main) means of drive in the drive train. Most people associate a primary drive with HD, but in reality every vehicle that rolls down the road has a primary drive. The only difference between the HD and the R* primary is the HD has a chain (wet primary) or a belt (dry primary) between the crankshaft primary gear and the clutch hub. The R* crankshaft primary drive gear meshes directly to the clutch hub (gear driven, no chain or belt) but it is indeed a primary drive. Look up the clutch in the parts manual, and look at item #1. Or better yet check out the pics HERE of the R* primary drive. Click the thumbnails below as well to see pics of the entire primary drive assembled, crankshaft to clutch. Notice how the crankshaft drive gear meshes directly with the clutch hub (gear driven, no chain or belt like HD). The complete assembly, crankshaft drive and clutch hub is the primary drive on the R* just as the primary on an HD is the crankshaft drive and clutch hub, but because the tranny is located inside the engine case on the R*, there was no need to go so far back with the clutch like on an HD, so there was no need to use a chain or belt to connect the crankshaft and clutch. The Roadie engine is a masterpiece in engineering. Very impressive powerplant.

I was told about a company that built a one of a kind open primary for a R* but when I contacted them they would tell me nothing about it and I offered them $1000 to build me one which they denied. They said the unit was the only one of its kind in the world, built for that one bike and that one bike only. I have yet to figure out how to mimic what they had done.
I'm sorry I cant remember the company name or the guy that told me about it, but it was on this forum I heard about it.

The guy in Arizona I'm talking to needs pictures and measurements of the transfer case and its shafts and gears so he has an idea of what it's going to take to get ti going. I've got 22 more days and I'll be home to get that info. to him. My guess right now is this is gonna wind up being one off gears and hopefully I can track down a belt without having to go custom on that as well.

Not to sound to hard but you bought a Roadie and not a HD if I under stand you like the look of the open belt but that's not a Roadie.
