Yamaha Parts Overpriced!!! 3 Years ago
After finally leaving Harley Davidson behind, I thought I was past the whole crazy over-priced manufacturer parts thing. I just went over to my dealership to look at Saddlebags and supports. The funny thing is for about $120 I could get some nice studded bags about the size of my pants pocket? No thanks, I ended up buying a pair online for half the price and about 4X the size (11x15x6). Then yesterday I went back to the dealer to see how much the supports would be. I figured 2 U shaped chrome bars couldn't be that much....wrong again, $105. After market ones online ended up costing $48 plus $4 for shipping.

Anyone else think Yamaha needs to realize they are nuts for charging an arm and leg for products we can get of similar quality for half price online????

I dont think they really care what we think, They have it, we want or need it, we pay what they want or do without. or as you said, go to a cheaper place to buy from.

Your 100% correct! I wanted to upgrade the air filter cover, they wanted $200 for it. Chrome tips for the one front and one back came to over $150. Other parts, like air filters, oil filters and things like that are easier to get at walmart.

I try and buy HD parts for my bike as they are usually much cheaper, and readily available, than Yamaha parts.

If it ain't on ebay, you don't need it!!

Look at my bike...with all the do-dads, custom paint and even the purchase price, I'm still under 10K!!!!

Bike on a budget!! I don't buy anything unless its used or half price!

Patience is the key Wee Hopper.

Thats the only way to find what you want at a reasonable price. I have done a mix of sale items, deals, Ebay, classifieds and so on. Plus parts meant for other bikes. There is a way to do it without lining Yamaha's pocket with money they didn't earn. I've said it before but if they would cut their aftermarket prices they would clean up in new unit sales. Most of us dump a lot in to our bikes AFTER the sale so make us want to do that with and buy your bike via low prices on the parts we want. Oh, and we want more choice too.

At least I'm not the only one that feels Yamaha could increase their profit by decreasing cost and increasing the number of sales rather than driving all of us to aftermarket companies and the almighty e-bay.

I've joked with people that the only difference between American and Japanese bikes is the cost of admission. All the other parts are the same.

I am sold on Ebay, my wife has an '04 Volvo XC90 SUV that the left headlight went out (HID). The stealer lists the bulb alone at 200 clams apiece! It turnd out to be the ballast and that was 530 bucks! I got a complete used headlight assy for 100 bucks on Ebay with bulb, ballast, and housing. Also got a NEW pair of HID bulbs 46 bucks for a pair shipped. NEVER do business with a stealership unless there is no other choice, IMHO.
